After 28 years the iconic cult-classic Master of Magic – strategy turn-based fantasy with elements of RPG – returns in a form of modern remake, now available on GOG!

Original Master of Magic was released in 1994, and captured the hearts of players all over the world as it was one of the most popular 4X strategy games of the 90s. The game allows you to play as an extremely powerful wizard, leading your troops and overcoming your magical opponents. During our Winter Sale you can grab this timeless classic on a -40% discount!

Now, its highly anticipated remake will provide all the things that we’ve loved initially about that title but in a modern gaming fashion.

In 2022’s Master of Magic you take up the role of one of 14 unique and diverse great wizards who compete with each other to dominate the worlds of Arcanus and Myrror. Choose from different schools of magic and fantasy races to command, then lead your minions and expand your influence and power across the land.

Recruit and command mighty armies of elves, dragons, dwarves, orcs and many more. Support them with powerful spells. Fight tactical turn-based battles and affect the outcome with your magic.

This awesome title will allow you to research new spells, engage in alchemy, perform rituals and use your arcane powers to change the world around you. But you should always beware of the machinations of your rival wizards, who seek to reach your same goals. And in the end, remember: there can be only one Master of Magic.

Expect 14 unique playable powerful wizards, 5 schools of magic and 18 traits to customize your wizard, over 60 special abilities and 200 spells to research, 14 fantasy races to command (including elves, dwarves, trolls, draconians, orcs, klackons, gnolls and more), 196 unique unit types, over 250 unique magical items (as well as custom crafting), and two parallel dimensional planes, Arcanus and Myrror!

Also, if you’d like to see some awesome Master of Magic gameplay, join us during another Winter Sale stream on our Twitch Channel, this Friday, December 16th, at 11 PM UTC, where Kilg0re_Tr0ut will cast some spells and discover this magical world.

Time has come to become the titular Master of Magic or reclaim this title after all these years!

SevenBlueSeven: The developers own discord server has a PDF that describes the differences between this game and the original.

BitMaster_1980: I dipped a toe in a bit yesterday myself and I read the PDF. If anything, it's too true to the core (well, except for the grotesque level of bugs the original had).

And I don't even understand what that stuff about "limitations of Unity" is supposed to mean.
Just read the PDF and arrived to the same conclusion. Came back to the thread and found your post. Well said.

Themken: Yay! Hopefully it is well done as the game concept deserves it.
It seems that they fixed lots of stuff. Nice!

Then again, I wonder if the game will live up to the memories, in a world where we have already played with the AOW series and other titles. Sometimes we remember what we used to like and become surprised when we find that it no longer works for us, for some reason.

Then again, it might be a much easier approach for newcomers and for people who want to revisit the classic with a better interface, better looks, fixes, and maybe a few quality of life improvements thrown in.

Personally I would not mind if the developers offered options to make the game more interesting for modern players. They may leave those hypothetical changes optional so that those who want to play in the closest way possible to the original can do it.

Thanks so much for that PDF link! This helps way more than any review etc.

I like what I read and what I see from the game screenshots/trailers.
While I am not really a fan of this new remaster/remake trend in the industry, and would rather that developers focused their resources on creating new experiences, this game does look good so far.

Hopefully, with this fresh coat of paint, new generations of gamers get to experience the wonderful Master of Magic.

SevenBlueSeven: Such truthiness!

BitMaster_1980: "Truthiness is the belief or assertion that a particular statement is true based on the intuition or perceptions of some individual or individuals, without regard to evidence, logic, intellectual examination, or facts. Truthiness can range from ignorant assertions of falsehoods to deliberate duplicity or propaganda intended to sway opinions."

I'd call that a Freudian slip...
The 'in-complete' part of my statement is that I plan to purchase Dwarf Fortress **But have not Yet**.

I do agree that spending $30 on DF over the incomplete new-MoM for $40 is a better purchase on the whole.

Amen to that and lots of luck for the devs. I would love to see some DLC coming, eventually. Especially DLC that optionally changed the way the game plays out, not just more wizards and races (although those already change the way the game plays).
Just a question

Why are you comparing the DF Remake with this release of Master of Magic? An originally ASCII "city builder" with and old DOS 4x kind of game.
remakes from the old. I belief that Slitherine or better said the guys from Owned by Gravity did a great job reviving the turn based classic Fantasy General. I do wonder how that came into being. Was it an idea sprang from the minds of the superstrategics housed over at Slitherine/Matrix with ObG as a hired in faction. Also surprising, or maybe not if you may know more. The same guys from ObG are now working on a another turn based title, Spellforce, for THQ Nordic. Wich resembles FG2 at least graphical. A good thing of course if you enjoyed FG2 and crave for more tbs fantasy challenges.
Still it does feel odd from my standpoint.

the same goes for this remake too. Is it worth supporting the endeavour? Can the game be fun? I bought the game blindly both from a supportive standpoint and with the knowledge that a lot of titles released by slitherine manage to ring at least a couple of bells. Even the broken ones most of the time are good for multiple hours of learning and enjoying. And enough hours in such a manner that it usually does not feel like money wasted.
(*blindly in a sense that i was familiar with the earlier released MoM (about 20 hours) but never touched the old original)

i guess most people that buy games from slitherine are the good ol' crowd with young upcoming war minded strategians flowing in on a slow and tidy stream. Those good ol' crowd might reach out occasionally in the many bouts that one can participate in. Sprouting texts like 'take my money' ' don't let the misses find out' or 'hold my bear'. i guess they find each other too in paradox titles such as HoI..... All in all a pretty small subgenre just duking it out, catered by i guess companies that know exactly how to stimulate their... dear ones ;)

Emm... what you said is interesting... but isn't Slitherine just the publisher? The game is developed by MuHa games.
It features their signature ''press f8 to report a bug''; honeycomb overlay and even some artwork is carried over from MuHa's Thea series.

Regarding the game itself - I am so conflicted about this!
I find the Thea series simply superb and cannot praise it enough. I was willing to pay full price for this, just to show my support for the developers. But this... is not Thea... and I have never played the original MoM.

Since this game has come out I keep swinging between reviews over on steam, and reviews over here. Both are mixed. :/

I will, eventually, definitely, buy this game; but not this year.

I believe in some cases it is more than 'just a publisher' though with other games, such as Astra Exodus. It is hard to find that golden tread you find in many of their games. So yea, maybe you are absolutely right.

SevenBlueSeven: It is a pale shadow of the original hidden by a 'graphics update' and the limitations of the Unity Engine.
What imaginary "limitations" do you think it has that would prevent anyone from making a great MoM remake with it, were they sufficiently skilled? After all, Amplitude uses Unity for all their games (Endless Space 1/2, Endless Legend, Humankind) and those are at least as complex as this one. Not to mention Old World and many others.

Don't expect a sensible answer. We are talking about someone whose post consisted of an endless stream of faulty assertions, then used the term "thruthiness" right afterwards and completely missed why that was funny in a sad kind of way even when called out...

I have been reading quite a few reviews over on Steam and a key pattern with the negative ones is that they are complaining about things that are bullshit. For example, there was one harping over the city UI. The one concrete example he gave ("that's gone!") is very definitely there. I used it myself. The tutorial familiar even highlights it explicitly for you while giving a quick rundown of the city UI.

There would be a lot of possible ways to complain about the game. "I don't like the new graphics style". "I don't like hexes." "The layout of screen X is worse." "Could have made use of a bit more of three decades of 4X research and development."
There is always a lot of rose-tinted-glasses problems with old games but in this case the glasses appear to be attached to the eyes via nails...

This.

Even on GOG people came to review bomb this remake, just because. Even in this thread. So... thanks to their effort, actually they helped draw attention towards what looks like a nice game, if anything, more polished than the original (see the changes).
