After 28 years the iconic cult-classic Master of Magic – strategy turn-based fantasy with elements of RPG – returns in a form of modern remake, now available on GOG!

Original Master of Magic was released in 1994, and captured the hearts of players all over the world as it was one of the most popular 4X strategy games of the 90s. The game allows you to play as an extremely powerful wizard, leading your troops and overcoming your magical opponents. During our Winter Sale you can grab this timeless classic on a -40% discount!

Now, its highly anticipated remake will provide all the things that we’ve loved initially about that title but in a modern gaming fashion.

In 2022’s Master of Magic you take up the role of one of 14 unique and diverse great wizards who compete with each other to dominate the worlds of Arcanus and Myrror. Choose from different schools of magic and fantasy races to command, then lead your minions and expand your influence and power across the land.

Recruit and command mighty armies of elves, dragons, dwarves, orcs and many more. Support them with powerful spells. Fight tactical turn-based battles and affect the outcome with your magic.

This awesome title will allow you to research new spells, engage in alchemy, perform rituals and use your arcane powers to change the world around you. But you should always beware of the machinations of your rival wizards, who seek to reach your same goals. And in the end, remember: there can be only one Master of Magic.

Expect 14 unique playable powerful wizards, 5 schools of magic and 18 traits to customize your wizard, over 60 special abilities and 200 spells to research, 14 fantasy races to command (including elves, dwarves, trolls, draconians, orcs, klackons, gnolls and more), 196 unique unit types, over 250 unique magical items (as well as custom crafting), and two parallel dimensional planes, Arcanus and Myrror!

Also, if you’d like to see some awesome Master of Magic gameplay, join us during another Winter Sale stream on our Twitch Channel, this Friday, December 16th, at 11 PM UTC, where Kilg0re_Tr0ut will cast some spells and discover this magical world.

Time has come to become the titular Master of Magic or reclaim this title after all these years!
For anyone interested, it appears to Wine very well.

1Byte2Bits: I'm sorry - maybe I'm just too blind to see it, but I can't find anything on the store page that mentions what changes this "remake" brings to the original, other than the obvious graphical/art changes.

What would I gain/lose from playing this compared to the original Master of Magic?
Are there any balance changes or other content?

The new art in the screenshots does look pretty nice, but gameplay is always king.
Hex grid. The rest is basically the same, maybe a little balancing... they didn't risk to implement any significant rule changes or gameplay improvements.
My impression is only based on the earlier beta, though, not on the current version.
Surprised to find MuHa (known for "Thea" 1&2) are part of the enterprise. Official announcement:

Thanks!

It will be very interesting to see how this affects gameplay/balance - I assume that means 6 directional movement on the grid.

Anyway, this release looks very cool - can't really complain about more Master of Magic, even if it's mostly the same with a fresh coat of paint. Gonna keep an eye out for reviews on this one!
Yay! Hopefully it is well done as the game concept deserves it.
But... where's all the DLC?
As others are said I'm happy it's on GOG but the price for this is insane, especially since it's not much different except for graphics for 25+ year old game.
The price seems a bit high for what should just be Master of Magic as we remember it with a face lift, fixes and Caster of Magic built-in. Anything more than that, and it really isn't Master of Magic anymore. The biggest issue for me personally though is that I really do not have an issue with how the classic game looks.
Ewww. $40? Wishlisted for now.
No thanks, I'd rather buy Dwarf Fort at 30$ since I know I'm supporting someone who genuinely has given to a community.
I would even pay 100 dolllars for this game. It will occupy a permanent space on my hard drive along TBS fantasy classics such as Heroes III, AOW III, and Warlords III DLR. It’s going to be a great Christmas!!

I have played well over a thousand hours in the original game.

The developers have not been completely honest in this remake. It is a pale shadow of the original hidden by a 'graphics update' and the limitations of the Unity Engine. It is one step forward, one step backward and three steps to the side.

The developers own discord server has a PDF that describes the differences between this game and the original.

This game is nothing like the original. There are far too many differences and features even missing due to the limitations of UNITY and a far-too-small DEV team. The game is not true enough to the original to be able to carry the name of the original. It is not enough of a new thing or an improvement over the original to claim it's legacy. This is without even considering the advancements of Caster of Magic or other QoL features and potential improvements.

It is not worth it's asking price to purchase **at this time** for a fan of the classic or an adjacent fan of 4x games.

The only hopeful thing for the future of the game is the promise of very vast and in depth-complex Mod tools. Eventually, **maybe in a year or so**, the passionate modding community can make this into something that is worthy of the name Master of Magic, that the DEVs were not able to produce given the limitations of UNITY and the insufficent manpower.

Hopefully, it can grow into something that is worthy of the title and even potentially surpass it - but only time will tell.

I dipped a toe in a bit yesterday myself and I read the PDF. If anything, it's too true to the core (well, except for the grotesque level of bugs the original had).

And I don't even understand what that stuff about "limitations of Unity" is supposed to mean.

"Truthiness is the belief or assertion that a particular statement is true based on the intuition or perceptions of some individual or individuals, without regard to evidence, logic, intellectual examination, or facts. Truthiness can range from ignorant assertions of falsehoods to deliberate duplicity or propaganda intended to sway opinions."

I'd call that a Freudian slip...
