Absolute classics! M1 Tank Platoon and M1 Tank Platoon II are now available on GOG! You can get them individually or grab both at the same time with special M1 Tank Platoon Collection.

These action-strategy tank simulators were released in 1989 and 1998 respectively and both of them mix nostalgia with awesome gameplay in the best way possible.

M1 Tank Platoon is a tank warfare tactical simulator having its roots in the Commodore Amiga, Atari ST and MS-DOS. You are put in the position of a main battle tank platoon commander in charge of four U.S. M1 Abrams tanks in a fictional campaign of battles against the Soviet Army in Central Europe. You can give orders to friendly units via a tactical map of the battle area as well as taking control of a single tank - assuming the role of either the tank commander, driver or gunner. Between the battles, surviving crew members increase in military rank and skill giving you an incentive to keep his team alive.

Its 9 years older brother, M1 Tank Platoon II is similar in its core and gives you command of a platoon of four M1A2 Abrams tanks and their crew. You make all the important decisions; including firing your tank's vast arsenal of weapons and using the state-of-the-art thermal view to seek out and destroy enemy forces. You can switch between fully-functioning internal cockpits or observe the conflict at first hand with the external 3-D view. It's all there for you: from commanding an individual tank to calling in support from aircraft, helicopters, ground vehicles and infantry!

Jump in and blast your enemies!
I was expecting and waiting both titles to be released in GOG.
About the price I must understad that there is not any glitch? They are even cheaper on Steam.

Maybe the M1 Tank II version here is different at some kind? I mean, Does It run under a wrapper not present in the Steam version?. Anyway It would not justify the same price for the plain DOS version. So I must understand that it is a mix between the usual prices offered by this publisher and a regional price of some kind. The difference is 2 € more for each game. Noticeable. Are you abusing us, Interplay? :D

Well I will end up getting these. Just asking for legit curiosity and surprise. Because considering that this is Interplay involved, then the next sale for these will be in five years or so. :D
Nice to see more classics for sure, but man, that's some pricing. In line with Interplay's decisions but still. Platoon 1 should be $5.99-6.99 imo, unless a lot of technical work had to be done to get it running, but I assume it wasn't hard through DOSBox.

"Lot of technical work"
They are just straight ports from Steam. The first one uses DOSBox, the second doesn't even support hardware mode out of the box. Interplay isn't even trying.
Does M1 Tank Platoon II work with an Xbox 360 controller?

Like the Steam version it comes with a plain ddrawcompat dll wrapper. I guess it helps to make the game run fine, proper menu without freezing and proper movies playing. And maybe for the D3D Mode ingame. Hard to say because the explosions are pixelated. In a Glorious 1997 protoacceleration modes, but the terrains seems to be smoothed or bilinear.

If you have nglide installed in your computer you can select Glide mode as well. It looks maybe better. But the same behavior with the explosions. All in the game looks fine in my opinion, as intended, and is smooth.

There is a newer version of ddrawcompat available. Pretty new, I guess. 0.4.0 version. But be careful. It does not work with the game. Movies are black and the menu freezes. Stay with the one installed with game for now.

Read the manual in both games. Important to enjoy it, the Microprose manuals are a must ifor themselves, Once understood it is a pleasure for fans of this niche in the simus genre.

I played M1TP 1 when it came out originally in the 80's and it is played with a KB. I am not sure about 2 but, you can try to to rebind controls with 3rd party stuff I imagine....

EDIT: And now the bad news. When Glide is selected the game crashes when finishing the mission (shift+q) and returning to menu because of an unsolved problem changing the ingame resolution and menu resolution apparently

If it is true this is one of the few games where the glide wrapper or the drawcompat wrapper for rendering ingame does not work stable enough. Even Gunship!, similar engine works flawesly.

In fact In the game page is advised that only the software mode is really functional. A pity. But I am sure a solution will be possible in the future. I suspect these guys decided to be in the safe way and did not mess with it for a solution. The GOG homemade wrapper would have been a solution, a similar wrapper but with more options. It would give the option tor rendering the game in the desktop resolution considering that the game is very sensible when changing resolutions.
wonderful release! oh time flies!!!!

Both games are intended and optimized to be played with a joystick in mind. in fact all is easier, manageable and comfortable with ajoystick although you can use the keyboard with them from scratch. It is functional. The dissadvantage is that in the oldie M1 Tank Platoon if you use the keys for steering or aiming, the cursor runs continously and you must make corrections to stop it.

In the sequel, you can use a mouse, keyboard, joystick or all of them. You can use the mouse to manualy switch things into the different stations/cockpits but it is too sensitive for aiming the gun. Again. It had a joystick in mind for a fine aiming or camera, steering etc.

About the use of a xbox gamepad, well, I guess it has to do which kind of system a generic gamepad or the xbox pad uses for emulating the joystick. Being an old game I guess that an xbox gamepad should be emulated via external programs.

Grargar: Price on Steam: €8.19 per game or €12.28 for both
Price on GOG: €12.09 per game or €18.19 for both

In an alternate universe, this pricing would make sense. But, this is not an alternate universe.
Dunno about currency conversion/regional pricing/etc., but in US$ they are the s...no, wait, it's still cheaper on Steam: $14.98 there vs. $14.99 on GOG! THIS IS AN OUTRAGE (Actually I'm lying: with Steam you have to add sales tax and with GOG you don't, so you're better off with GOG, unless of course you live in one of the few states that don't have sales tax, in which case I am not lying.)

In Europe, we pay the price we are being shown, since the idea is that the prices already contain VAT. So, this 4/6 bucks difference is really 4/6 bucks difference and doesn't contain any checkout shenanigans. I don't know why Interplay chose specifically to increase the regional price on GOG, but it's something that I should have expected from a company that thinks it's a good idea to increase the price of their games over time.

Looks fine to me. Maybe not a standard DRM-free tax but a DRM-free tax just the same.
€12.09 für such an old game (1989), w0o0t. If they plan to keep having sale price be -90% every sale it makes sense, otherwise not really.

Is there a good simulator for Russian tanks (this is not political as they are used by many countries)? I have seen there are sims for World War II tanks and using the tank in Battlefield 2 was quite fun depending on the map.

Speaking about proper and accurate simulators at some sort:

From Graviteam Tactics you have their first game Steel Fury Kharkov 1942, in the same time other one called T-34 vs Tiger was released. Or simulating something more modern T-72 Balkans on Fire or Iron Warriors T-72 Tank Command
