Fear of the blank.

<span class="bold">Layers of Fear</span>, a horror adventure where you brush against your most creative nightmares, is available now for Windows, Mac, and Linux, DRM-free on GOG.com.

What is art if not a gut-wrenching battle between the established and the proposed, the innovative and the classic, the bold and the conventional. Does the artist captivate his subjects or does he set them free? Does he reshape his surroundings using his paintbrush as a carving knife or do they reshape him, hacking off pieces and peeling back layers until his very soul lays bare? Once you're faced with a blank canvas, all these questions come crushing down on you and you'll have to draw your own exit if you are ever going to reach salvation before you reach the bottom.

Finishing your masterpiece threatens to be your undoing as Layers of Fear keep stacking on your psyche. Your most dependable source of inspiration, the 19th century paintings hanging on every wall, are now turning on you, playing tricks on your fragile mind. The foreboding mansion shifts, spins, and bleeds in the blink of an eye, leading your mind astray with its impossible architecture and walls covered in horrible markings. Horrors that you thought you had buried forever now come shambling out of the woodwork. This is how the mind of a deranged artist looks like. Can you peel back the insanity and unearth the terrible secrets that lie beneath?

Paint your greatest sins in the color of madness and finish your masterpiece before you are consumed by <span class="bold">Layers of Fear</span>, DRM-free on GOG.com.

Three times would have been enough ;-)
It this forum had a proper preview function and didn't seemingly hang on BBCode tags in the text entry window it probably wouldn't happen as often.
Good to see some modern 3D on GOG.

Not familiar with the game, but the teasers are interesting. Would prefer at least one video dedicated to previewing the gameplay tho.

You could use Barefoot Essentials for that.

Another must-buy on release day.

Please GOG no more adventure games in the next 3 months. There are other things I have to pay for; but for today, I'm as pleased as Punch for the release of 2 games I waited for :)
"Fear of the blank. "

As in "blank canvas"? Yeah, been there, done that.

Hm, this looks good, and the theme is relevant to my interests, but is the gameplay any good? I've played through most of the Horror games on GOG now, including Amnesia, Machine for Pigs, Soma, Outlast and Kholat, and while most of them are good games, the game elements which were supposed to induce horror and fear were frequently just an annoyance. So is this just another Amnesia clone? Do you spend half of the game in closets or under beds? Or does it have a different ( gameplay ) approach at the whole Horror theme? I liked how the Horror in Kholat was mostly created through the environments and atmosphere.

Oh yeah, and is there an option to turn off the horribly overused chromatic aberration effect? In Soma it was at least well suited for the theme of the game, yet I still had to turn it off occasionally.

Aspyr-Blair: Love this post, although I'm sad to say bringing Stubbs back to life is extremely unlikely.
GOG? Why is this person's text not orange? Is that not the new thing? Like in the release thread for K&ocirc;na: Day One?

It looks to me to not be an Amnesia clone, which is why I put it on my wishlist. But I havn't played it so can't be sure. I would mention it does look like a scary version of **** ****. Which I won't mention for fear of giving the wrong impression.

Because of this:

mrkgnao: As I've probably mentioned many times before, inconsistency is GOG's trademark.
:D
Another game that isn't support Radeon HD 5850 . Passing .

rampancy: If anyone wants to know more about this game, Jim Sterling has a Squirty Play video of it (back when it was on Steam EA) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLdcL0I52WQ

IMO, he didn't think much of it, and from the gameplay shown it doesn't look like much either.

Aspyr-Blair: Like most reviews in the genre (whether film or games), we expected wildly different views. For example GamesRadar lauded it as "one of the best horror games ever made" while IGN US gave it a 5.8 (strangely all other international IGN sites had much higher scores).

We happen to love horror, and believe Layers is an excellent addition to the genre. Thats why we jumped in and are so excited to be a part of this launch.
IGN US gave Alien Isolation 5.9 so Layers of Fear must be a really good horror game.

vicklemos: At last, we have the almighty Aspyr among us. The circle is now complete.
Never forget that Aspyr brought us pc, mac and now linux gamers so many memorable games that I don't know where to start... rusky 1C classics, Paraworld, Anno games, Spyhunter, that spectacular DS ad-hoc game, Dreamkiller, that cool 2008 Turok and the supreme créme de la créme: STUBBS.
Not to mention their current line up which is, undoubtely, among the finest out there. How come you guys aren't millionaires yet? :P

Aspyr is love, Aspyr is life.
One of my top 5 publishers/devs are now here. Praise the lawd ;D
Wow...thank you so much for the praise! I'm forwarding this on to the team :)

I've been here nearly 10 years, so I remember every single one of those with fondness. I was even on the QA team for Turok :)

She was really taken to task in the comments. So much so that she had to jump in and defend the review.

Its obviously the opinion of the reviewer, but I was so impressed by this game during my first evaluation, that I'm having a hard time seeing her point.

There are several times in this game when I took my headphones off and said to my colleagues..."these are some of the most creative scares I've ever seen."

avatar
Smannesman: Looks nice, pretty Amnesia-ish.
If it's not all jump scares and/or running from monsters, I'm interested.
No monsters, no fighting, some well earned jump scares, and one hell of a ride.

Its a really interesting dive into a crumbling psyche...the game stayed with me for several days after my first run. Subsequent playthroughs opened up a lot more however. If your a completionist, this game has some treats for you.

We have some treats planned for that time period. Stay tuned ;)
