lostwolfe: i also find it kind of sad that people are so frustrated that this game got released here. for the people who are looking for niche experiences, this should be a fine, quite niche experience.
avatar
ReynardFox: When GOG has rejected numerous, objectively high quality games (some that I personally really, really wanted) under the excuse of 'too niche' in the past, can you blame us for feeling slighted and getting salty when we now see GOG letting any old weird and questionable games on the store?

I wouldn't care what kind of whackado releases GOG would greenlight if they didn't already have a history of ignoring other games out of pure stupidity and ignorance.
have said already and will keep saying:

i strongly agree. the curation process needs help and work.

i just find it sad that when interesting experiences DO come here, they get frowned upon.

and they get frowned upon for more than just being interesting experiences. earlier in the thread people were bemoaning this particular game exactly BECAUSE of it's content. eg: "oh no, a game where old people date old people. boo!"

you know what i want to see more of in games? interesting protagonists. here's a game with exactly that. that's cool.

but these folks frowning upon this game will take "odd protagonists" when it serves their purpose [that is to say, when it's a game that's strictly up their alley.] - it's a frustrating dissonance that i wish didn't happen quite so often, here.

Omg, people are expressing their opinion on a game. Oh no. We can't shut them up so let's moan about them moaning about the game. So they in turn could moan about us moaning about them moaning etc..

And all that is good. You really think that Gog cares what people say about the game? No they don't. Developers don't care. Publishers don't care. All they care is how well the game sells. And the more controversal the game is and the more talk it generates the better it is (usually) for the sales. It's ONLY when the sales are bad when someone goes and looks what the comments or reviews are saying. But the thing about PR is that even "bad" PR is good. It means that you aren't invisible. Do you know what is bad for a game? It's when no one cares. When no one talks about it. And usually people don't talk about it when it's bland and boring. So when people are moaning about a game you like - take it as a compliment.

So you are all good. Continue. Lets all moan about something. It's all good. Just don't feel bad about it. Don't take it too seriously. Don't take it personally. It's all fun and games. That's all.

Breja: It's not just about what gets accepted but also about what simultanously gets rejected/ignored and for what reason. Basically, it's hard to accept any mercantile factors as grounds for passing on a game when something like this gets a release.

Also, I'd love GOG to make things a bit easier for us if they are going to keep adding trash (in my opnion) like this to the catalogue. Better filters for searching the store, the option to hide/ignore games, bring back GOG-mixes to make looking for games we actually might be interested in easier.
On the note of the mercantile factors: What kind of ROI is someone who hosts a game on GOG expecting to get? Some publishers like Strategy First? I totally expect them to do a "Stop and Drop", where they kick the game off the bus, and then drive immediately onward, but what of indie games like this? Many of them have in the past, expressed a disappointment or delisted over poor sales.

lostwolfe: there are plenty of games in the gog catalog that are NEVER going to have mass appeal outside of these particular four walls.

i'm talking about games like zork, which is a very old game by this point. i'm talking about games like the spiderweb games, which are GREAT games - for a handful of players.
I can't agree even more. I am quite thankful to GOG for bringing relatively obscure games like Falcon AT, Sands of Fire, Space Rogue and others which I am discovering now - which are much less known even compared to old hits like Zork or F-19.

well, to be fair:

i'm not moaning so much as i am a little sad that - as a collective - as people who like games - we can't move past "guy with five o' clock shadow and guns good, everything else bad." [unless it's a nice looking lady, of course.]

and this was kind of what i was commenting on.

also: while i agree with your reasoning - probably the only thing that matters for the most part to anyone who isn't the developer and the player is the profit number, i do think that ancillary opinions DO matter to those two groups of people.

i want it to be known [and hopefully the developer sees - even if the publisher doesn't care and gog don't care] - that i am glad this game, with it's content exists. if my one voice lets the developer [and other players who are interested in experiences like this] see my response and go, "oh, that's cool! someone enjoys our idea!" then maybe that will lead to more games like this - and maybe that will let other players like me know that they're not alone in liking this sort of thing.

so, voicing an opinion on the matter is important.

i'm not taking it personally [though i do expect my rep to tank. can't be diverse on gog, that's baaaad!] - but i think it's important to take games like this seriously, because more games like this should be made.

Excuse me, I do happen to prefer the "feminine twink with a sword" type over "Grizzle Manhair with guns". Heck, give me a "nice anthromorphic fox girl with magic".

You're trying very hard to make this something it's not. There's plenty games here that in no way, shape, or form fall into this "guy with five o' clock shadow and guns" cathegory, and no one thought them as questionable a release as this. Hell, they are probably the majority of the catalogue, and by quite a margin.

This isn't some ambitious production too challenging for our narrow minds. It's a cheap flash-looking, extremely niche date sim, another one in a short time span. You can't throw another game like this to a crowd waiting for Freelancer, American McGee's Alice, Dune or Black & White or a new Bethesda game during another Bethesda sale, and expect enthusiasm.

Let's just do a simple experiment, let's go the community wishlist, most voted ever, and see where the first date sim shows up...

Uh, this may take a while...

CLOSET?!

I once made a post that was nothing but Tokifuji comic titles!

And most of those people also have unrealistic expectations more often than not. This game may not be for me, but with GOG's more curious releases of late I just shrug and move on. I don't see the point getting upset about it. I've got a shit-ton of games still waiting to be played. A week or two without new games of interest make no difference to me.

Okay then. Change that to "Proud and shouting it out loud!" Good for you. Whatever floats your boat. It's all good.

I totally get the generalized complaint that GOG accepts "artsy niche indie" titles seemingly more readily than traditional sort of titles (though I would say this year has been pretty outstanding for GOG releases). In fact I myself have made the complaint that unconventional games like this have been brought in while stuff I really wanted was rejected/kept out for the time being...it can feel frustrating, I get that.

However, I have to say it is dismaying to see people complaining about stuff like an additional pronoun and the "horror" of older people dating each other. Maybe I missed it but I'm surprised no one has complained yet about how the game advertises the possibility of poly relationships too. To me, complaining about these things is immaturity. It's a big wide world out there and the fact that games allow for additional options is a good thing.

that's pretty cool and i'm glad you like what you like.

but you are /probably/ in the minority on gog. [which is fine, by the by.]
