History Lessons

A new batch of Paradox Strategy titles comes to GOG.com, just in time for yet another floor of the Bundle Tower! That's Europa Universalis II, Europa Universalis: Rome Gold and Hearts of Iron II: Complete - our bundle of History Lessons!

Europa Universalis II is very much like the original title - but with a longer timeline, hundreds of new provinces and playable countries, and even more detail combined with quality of life improvements. It's the sequel to the award winning (and groundbreaking) strategy title that's spawned so many of Paradox Entertainment's future games - including the two released today.
One of EU's direct descendants, Europa Universalis: Rome Gold also known simply as Rome, brings the familiar gameplay into 250 years of Roman history, with a few twists like a fully 3D-map, and a story that can start all the way back in the year 27 B.C. The Gold release also includes the Vae Victis expansion pack.
Hearts of Iron II: Complete, like any Paradox sequel, is both deeper and more streamlined than the previous entry, offering an all-around improved hour-by-hour World War 2 grand-strategy simulation full of historical detail, and tactical depth. Small-scale invasion scenarios to all out global war - this one has you covered.

Learning history has never been more fun, than with the Bundle Tower History Lessons, available now 75% off on GOG.com!

phaolo: Thanks to both, even if I'm considering ALL games, not only those here.
I'd like to identify the best and skip the rest.
Basically what I would recommend from all the paradox games available is:

- Crusader Kings Complete
- EU2
- Victoria
- Hearts of Iron 2

The reason for the recommendation is following. You can continue your game from Crusader Kings in Eu 2 and the game from EU 2 in Victoria and the game from Victoria in Hearts of Iron 2. Basically if you get those games and they are arguably all good you can play one dynasty for a very long time.

edit: From the new paradox games definitely Victoria 2 and Crusader Kings 2.

You really seem to prefer the older Paradox, don't you? But anyway you're right. It's a great feature that you can continue from CK to HoI 2. In the newer iterations of the games this is unfortunately not really possible (only from CKII to EUIV afaik).

Actually I do like new paradox games. Victoria 2 for example is a really great game and I probably played more then 100 hours of it :) CK 2 is probably the pinnacle of paradox games but the tone of dlc has killed all the enjoyment in that game for me. Hearts of Iron 3 I did not play yet. EU3 is also very good.

Basically its very hard to recommend a particular paradox game cause they are all good.

Yeah they really overdid the DLC. But for me Crusader Kings II is still one of my favourite games of all time :). I unfortunately never had the time and patience to really enjoy Victoria II. I haven't played HoI III either.
So I bought EU2 and EU:Rome and HOI2, but I am not that much into WW2 stuff.

If anybody really wants to get into HOI2 send me a pm.

edit:
Game has been redeemed by a fellow GOGer.

That's a cool feature indeed!
GOG should do a promo pack just with those.

Oh no lol XD
EU2?

We're getting there.

One of the few series that actually got better over time, I'm hoping to see EU IV on here, I'd snatch that up in a second.

I guess that'll take some time until it'll appears here as Paradox isn't done with releasing DLC for that game.

....a story that can start all the way back in the year 27 B.C.

Gandos: You mean a story that can END in the year 27 B.C. The game's starting year is 280 B.C. :P
From the gamecard:
*Start at any date between 280 B.C. and 27 B.C.
I assume that means that either the precise year in which one wants to begin play can be chosen, or there are various scenarios which start at different points in history. Or the game includes both of those options.

Yeah, Paradox isn't much for the season pass, are they?

But those complete editions do come out eventually.
So I bought EU2. I wrote a review for it but it looks like it isn't showing up on the page. Oh well. I suggest to anyone that buys this game to install the AGCEEP mod that can be found here: http://agceep.software.informer.com/

I tried it out with the GOG version and it works perfectly. Really makes the game shine.

Gandos: The music itself is public domain, but the specific performances used for EUII are not. Kind of like how the original Alice in Wonderland is in public domain, but the copyright for the various movie adaptations belongs to their respective companies.
Thats a shame, would have really liked a soundtrack. I could listen to the music from this game all day and I'm not that much of a classical music guy.

So they release games and immediately start selling them with -75%. Isn't this crazy price behavior? If this isn't I don't know what is.

Actually this is a common paradox pricing policy for their games. Set a high normal price and then discount it regularly to 75%.

Thanks Matruchus! Fixed the link in my post, I just fail at using GOG forums so often.

Not really. Might be because they release expansions for the games years after the launch. I'm not even sure they're done with CKII yet...but they really like to give 75% discounts for their games :).
