I am a rock, I am an island.

Dear Esther: Landmark Edition, the definitive version of the narrative-driven experience that kicked off a sub-genre, is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com!

Looking more stunning than ever, Dear Esther is a modern classic that's hard to forget.
You've arrived at an island that floats on the verge of sorrow. Painful memories echo through its mesmerising caverns and stunning landscapes, carried in a mellow narrator's voice. Who are you, and how did you earn the privilege to share this burden?

this looks nice and not a bad way to end a busy day.
Wishlisted. Never played it. I had heard of it. I actually enjoyed mind path to thalamus so maybe I'll give this a shot later on. But no puzzles according to what I've read elsewhere? I guess I don't mind if the aesthetics and story are as interesting as some folks say. Thanks for bringing it here.

Klumpen0815: The graphics of the old version were already pretty (and ran well on most even older systems), has anything else changed?
I played it yesterday about half an hour. Imo it looks even prettier but it still has the same problems of textures looking really bad when looking closer. They did not change the speed or much of the narration or the scenery. Basically it feels nearly exactly the same. But it now officially has subtitles in different languages (the German version for the original was not official) and don't forget the added commentary. At least on steam they also added achievements.

Just in case somebody already bought the original on humble and is hoping getting new version DRM-free as a free update. This is what the devs told me when I asked them about it:

"We’re not doing a free DRM free upgrade, but you can access the free version via the steam key you received when you bought the game from Humble – activate that and you’ll get the upgrade in your Steam library. Appreciate not everyone likes DRM but we’re a really small company and administering an upgrade like this is a really complex task, so it’s the best we can do."

and

"Hi Marko. Currently we are only offering the DRM version. If this changes I will let you know."

So if you want to get this new version without DRM you'll have to buy again here or on humble.

Klumpen0815: I liked Dear Esther when I played the Linux version from HumbleBundle.
Oh wait...

Does someone know why this "Landmark Edition" isn't available on Linux and whether there's a chance of it being ported?
Humble doesn't have the old game anymore and the new version doesn't support Linux there either.
"Unfortunately, for various practical and budgetary reasons, the Landmark Edition will not be ported to Linux. We've been in touch with GOG, and hope to be able to bring the game to their store when we release the Landmark Edition on PC & Mac." (4 Months ago)

Tarhiel: Just change the FOV :)

gogtrial34987: I obviously looked around to do so, but didn't find any way in which that was possible (at the time; for the Humble Linux version).

Do you offhand know of any instructions on how to do this?
Don't know about the Linux version but at least for the win version of the original you could edit some config files. I am sure those tweaking guides could be found on the steam forums in case you are interested. I don't know if the same is possible for the new version being ported to Unity.
Worth noting:

The Chinese Room are the same guys (or guy) that publicly accused CD Projekt Red of being a "sexist" game developer. And mainly because of this picture:

Mr.Caine: Except there are plenty of walking simulators that did everything better then DE.

Epitaph666: such as?

By the way, i hope the BWP games get released FINALLY with Nocturne!
This!
But I already lost my hope. :(
In addition, the Blair Witch series does not have too many votes at all:

WTF? It's Unity, how hard can it be? I thought Unity is specifically made for easy multi-platform compiling. oO

I guess they meant "sexy".
Many people make this mistake. ;)

Why is this worth noting? It may be their opinion - I can see nothing bad here even though I don't share it.
looks prettu interesting.
Just bought it on the Xbox sale actually, plan to play it today. It will run better on console than my outdated PC anyway. Never thought I'd enjoy these types of interactive experiences, but i played "Everybody's Gone to the Rapture" (twice actually) on PS4 when it was a PS Plus game a few months back and loved it- so I'm hoping this is similar.

Trying to understand where exactly the difficulty lies - are you saying that one can purchase this Landmark Edition on Humble Bundle as both a DRM-free download and a Steam key? If yes, then they already did a "DRM-free upgrade", even if one doesn't count the GOG version.

When you buy the DRM-free version of the Landmark Edition you'll get a steam key for it automatically. It was the same with the original version. However only the steam part of the original will get the free update. So even though you'll be able to buy this DRM-free on humble you won't get it DRM-free for free. So for owners of the DRM-free original on humble the only way to get the DRM-free update atm is to buy it here on GOG or humble again. What makes matters worse is that the steam version depends on steam so you won't be able to run it without having the steam client active.

And this is what I don't get. They told you:

They've already made a DRM-free version of the Landmark Edition, so tell/ask HB to either replace the original one with this (if there's supposed to be no original anymore, but this doesn't seem to hold up since everyone that bought the game before is stuck with the original now anyway), or ask HB to add the Landmark Edition to everyone's account, alongside the original one (which was done recently for another game, wasn't it?). What exactly about this is so complicated to administrate?

Sounds to me that they expect those wanting a DRM-free version of the Landmark Edition to pay for what they give away for free to Steam users that don't care.

With that mindset, I'm curious to see if the GOG version will fall behind on updates when and if they make any.

Now I (hopefully) understood what you wanted to say when you said that they "already did a DRM-free upgrade". Yes, the game is ready and available they just had to tell humble to add it to the library of those who own the original - the same way the devs from Read Only Memorys did it recently. I agree completely with everything you said including the fact that the "free steam versions" should be paid by people who want their games DRM-free. However since they did not have to give this away for free at all it's a hard being mad about the devs.
