Pioneers. Mercenaries. Killers.

Deadnaut a squad-based survival game, is available now for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux - DRM-free on GOG.com with a 20% discount.

So named because they're unlikely to return. Deadnaut is a game of tactics, fear, and survival - you're in command of a small squad of Deadnauts as they explore and battle their way through derelict shells of formerly glorious alien starships. Though you'll be commandeering from afar, Deadnaut is technically a first person game: you're watching events unfold from the relative safety of your command center. Lo-fi displays will be your eyes as you give out commands and flip switches. Your ears will be the hazy field reports of terrified blips struggling to describe the unknown. The Deadnauts' life expectancy is short, but each playthrough will be different enough to keep you expecting the unexpected. Deadnaut is a game with a unique understanding of how to tell a story through gameplay and minimalism.

Hope you don't have plans for after, you're a Deadnaut now. Available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 20% launch discount will last for one week, until Wednesday, March 18, at 10:59 AM GMT.

acemarch: Just played the demo, and you are playing the role of a ship commander type. You can only issue orders based on the radar display you have etc. The screen is only as big as it shows, but you can zoom in and out to some degree.

IronArcturus: Thanks for the info! Does the game run in a window by any chance?
The demo has a windowed mode if that's what you mean.

yup.
though to get the full claustrophobic experience, you want it running fullscreen.

Great!

Vythonaut: Nice looking UI (but maybe a hell to control?)
not that bad actually - takes some practice to get used to it - particularly flipping the switches to get just the info you need, but it is a game in which you can expect to die / fail quite a bit before getting anywhere anyway.

So it is like a roguelike game with randomized ships?

to some degree yes - the ships are randomised and its semi permadeath (you can clone crew between missions and as long as one makes it out alive of the mission, you dont fail). you will fail though - a fair bit.
just like with zafehouse diaries you can add custom crew as well (one guy on the steam forum was in the process of adding the cast of aliens), but any time you clone them, their stats randomise. this plays on a similar thing to zafehouse, in that crew interactions can affect their efficiency on mission and they'll be carrying stimpacks to counterbalance some of their flaws. everythings limited though.

Aningan: What's a Deadnaut? Is it some kind of Dreadnought. Dreadnoughts are cool! For the Emperor!
Dreadnoughts are just about to become cool.
If someone made a game out of Kristen Kathryn Rusch's "Diving Universe" books, it might look a lot like this.

Hmmm, promising premise.

Oh yeah! I saw some footage of it a month ago. Looks great but it also looks like teamwork matters a lot and I don't have faith in teamwork over the internet unless you already know your team.

Well, with that name as a title, I didn't expect anything different... And building the team with the characters of Aliens is a must! Also, I saw a couple of videos and an idea of a mod / spin off that travels you back in Ukraine in 1986 to assume control of the "liquidators" came to my mind.. silly? maybe... :-)
This looks REALLY cool!

Can anyone give an idea of the gameplay loop?

While probably not eclipsing my other major 'Naut want ;) I'll be keeping an eye on this for sure! I might lean toward grabbing it, but well you know... Insomnia and all LOL.

*edit

Interesting I was just looking over the gamercard again and saw a "Relationship Diagram" and though "Hmm, sort of like the thing in Zafehouse that didn't look like too fun a mechanic..." and I JUST noticed it was a "followup" to Zafehouse (obviously in a different world / style). Did not know that when I first checked it out.

It looks pretty interesting and I can just see me getting attached to my crew and keeping them alive, however Iwould be more interested in watching one of gogs resident twitch recorders do a play thru of this ,due to the learning curve and the fact that i am lazier than a ginger cat on a window sill.

Good call! I'll be keeping an eye on the Twitch schedule just in case.
Instabought. Loved Zafehouse Diaries and was really looking forward to Deadnauts.
Have not had the chance to play Zafehouse yet but this looks very interesting.
