It does use MAME. As I said, it's an older version. Look it up for yourself.
I don't want the sports games so I will wait for an individual discount for Sengoku 3. The new action pack games are a nice addiction. Got them. And yes, I play with MAME. But for a small fee I am happy to get those ROMs legally here and I would love many others to come, like Three Wonders. Do you think there is hope for Capcom games to come here on GOG? Oh I just saw Street Fighter Alfa 2. So there is hope.

You can vote Three Wonders in the wishlist here:

Man! Magician Lord, Willow, I would get them all gladly...
It is true that these emulators are not good generally speaking, and the interface is mostly awful. But the discounted price is reasonable.

All I've found is multiple discussions pointing to DotEmu using MAME without permission in Raiden Legacy, and that their Neo-Geo humble bundle ports use an unlicensed hack version of the Nebula emulator.

This is actually the best case scenario, because if these actually do run on MAME, then DotEmu are even more incompetent than I thought.

I think half the point here is actually buy them to run them on MAME. It would be disappointing if they didn't.

If that's all you've found then you didn't look hard enough. You could always ask MAMEDev directly, if you don't trust any other sources.

If the MAME romsets update (and they eventually will in one way or another), these versions would become invalid, negating their worth entirely.

Yep that's true. Couldn't one still use old romsets though?

My dear! After the annoying intro, I began playing Pulstar. I pressed my controller left trigger and this quit the game. It is so idiotic! I forgot it happened with the old ones too.

Then by all means, point me to where it explicitly says MAME was licensed by DotEmu because what I'm finding is the Humble releases were based on a version of Nebula licensed by GameTap, and the GOG versions are in many ways identical (except with far worse performance) to those.

As long as you're willing to stick to an old version of MAME sure. Also welcome to DotEmu's quality releases. ;)

Why would DotEmu have to license anything from MAME if the license had changed to allow for commercial use? Did you forget the part about the license changing? Even if it didn't use MAME, the ROM sets for these releases can be used with older versions of MAME, unless you update the BIOS files included with those sets to use newer versions of MAME. Also, look up who created Nebula. It was Elsemi. Take a guess what other emulator (MAME) he worked on before being hired by one of the companies that made some of the arcade games Elsemi emulated.
Ok, this will probably be a really stupid question, but with gaming industry today you can never be too sure: do the Metal Slugs have local co-op multiplayer?
Nice one!

Now please add the soundtracks for Metal Slug 3, Fatal Fury Special, Art Of Fighting 2 and Samurai Showdown in both mp3 and flac and decrease the price by a further 50% and *BOOM* gog customers will finally get the same bang for our bucks as the people who bought the NEOGEO bundle on Humble 2 years ago.

Sure Joey, em, Enebias. I just tried it on MS 3 and it worked.

I get your point about MAME being free to use if you have obtained the rights from the game publisher, but you explicitly claimed that DotEmu uses use MAME, I found evidence to the contrary and you've just shown me you were speculating.

I know who made Nebula, I used Nebula for years and it hasn't used MAME code for a very long time, in fact someone just pointed out there's a neogeo.dat in the GOG release of Metal Slug that contains the string (MultiPart: Nebula 2.25 NeoGeo Romsets (Based on Mr-J RomData). Nebula 2.25 has no ties to MAME at all, it is entirely Elsemi's work.

Where do you think Nebula got its NeoGeo code from? It was derived from MAME's NeoGeo driver. Those guys aren't going to do more work than they have to do. If DotEmu decided to use any Nebula code at all then that would explain a lot but the SNK Anniversary Bundle sets work in MAME up to .171 or so without the new BIOS files. Use ten year old code or use code that's about two years old? I know which one I'd use. Then there's the fact that the SNK Anniversary Bundle was released just a few months after MAME's license changed.

Thank you! :)
I have just what I need in the store credits wallet left from a previous purchase, I could buy the first one and play it with my sister.
