My friend upgraded his laptop RAM and he no longer needs the ram that he had before therefore he is going to gift it to me but since neither of us have knowledge of this subject i would appreciate an answer:

RAM currently on my laptop: http://i.imgur.com/Krut9XY.jpg

RAM that my friend is going to gift me (only one): http://i.imgur.com/vZLYP9t.jpg

Are they compatible? Can i have 6GB of RAM (1x 2GB from my current and 1x 4GB)? Or would there be some kind of bottleneck?

They're are probably moving back to L.A.

Next question.

From what I understand about ram is they must be the same value as in:1GB.2GB.4GB...

How have you dodge a ban or a mob rage/lynch from goggers for this long?

So it needs to be a pair of the same? 2+2 4+4 etc? Can someone confirm this? Btw, would there be a noticeable difference in the laptop performance going from 4GB to 8GB?

Yes,as far I know that's correct...
As for performance it would be hard to notice any difference..

I lose 6 to 10 points a day; I don't dodge them :D

However if it suits you I promise never to crash one of your threads again. :D

Uhm, i didn't want to accept both RAMs from him but i guess i'll have to. Oh well, thanks for the information.

No need, i'll hire a bouncer and give your picture, my threads will be protected from your invasions.

Basically Both Ram are DDR3-1333Mhz

10600 and 10666 are basically the same thing, it's just some companies formulate the speed in different ways.

I've searched a few sites and here's the results:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/is-ddr3-pc3-10600-compatible-with-pc3-10666-ram.627270/
and
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-1815995/10666-work-10600.html

You will have a total of 6GB. Also remember that to be able to utilize all the memory you need to have a 64bit OS.

EDIT:

Just to clarify, Having identical ram is recommended but not necessary. I've seen and fixed many systems with non identical ram and they work fine.

As long as they fit, it will most likely *work*. RAM tends to not cause too many problems these days (assuming it's not defective, of course).

You can mix RAM sticks, but you usually take a bit of a performance hit if you do - when you buy a pair of RAM sticks, they'll have been matched so they're able to run in dual channel mode, which gives a small performance boost. That won't be possible if you mix them. You're probably not going to notice much of a change in practice, unless you need to perform heavy calculations - so it may very well be the case that the extra RAM makes up for it.

If you're using a 32-bit version of Windows, however, don't bother. You won't be able to make use of the extra RAM. (If you haven't upgraded your RAM previously, however, you are likely running a 64-bit operating system, so that wouldn't be a problem then.)
Oh so it works but it will have less performance... Uhm... I'll let him decide but i think i'll prefer to maintain the actual 4GB of RAM instead of risking some kind of problem. Thanks for the answers.

I have worked in an electronics retail store and I can tell you, that chances are, that you can swap one of your SO-DIMMs with one of your friends without any problems. Both picures show PC3 10600 Modules. It's just that the Kingston ones use the proper name. Some manufacturers simply use the theoretical bandwith that these modules can achieve, which is 10666 MB. Therefore a lot of people assume that PC3 10666 is a little bit faster than PC3 10600, but that's wrong. If you put your friends module in and everything gets properly detected, than everything is fine and you won't lose any speed. Unfortunately you haven't told us what kind of motherboard and cpu is in your laptop, because they could interfere here. If you have an old 32 Bit board or cpu, than upgrading the ram beyond 4GB is useless without PAE. I have seen 64 bit laptops that only support up to 8GB of RAM, but I wouldn't want to bet that this is the lowest value. I would simply try it out and see what happens. If you start your laptop after having swapped the modules, three things could happen:
1. The system boots and everything is fine. ;-) (Just check your bios you might be running on 2GB only)
2. Your laptop starts beeping when you switch it on. This means your Ram module is either defective or has not been inserted properly.
3. Your screen stays black or starts to flicker a little. This means you have exceeded your ram limit and your system can only handle 4GB :-(

Thanks for the answer. The laptop is Asus N61jq. My friend has the same laptop (but he had the newer version that had 8GB of RAM) and he upgraded his RAM to 16GB so what you said wouldn't be a problem.
But he already decided to give me the 8GB since he won't use it anymore (he wanted one of the 4GB just in case something happened) but i appreciate the information.
Wow, this is really odd. According to the Asus Datasheet, your and your friends laptop should only be able to handle 8GB Ram... and should should use PC3 8500 Modules...

DDR3 1066 MHz SDRAM, 2 x SO-DIMM socket for expansion up to 8 G SDRAM
