Rezinger: Still better than giving Valve or Bethesda any more profit after that BS that they pulled.

On a plus side, this place seems like a promising alternative for my future purchases.
Oh, definitely. It's just that at one point, this was the place to buy games without having to worry about DLCs, regional pricing or constant patching, paradisiac stuff. By now, a lot of it has fallen to industry standards.

GOG is still, in my opinion, the best and most trustworthy videogame store around. That said, I wouldn't paint it as a paragon of justice, they do occasionally mess up badly. Pushing your own high ideals to another party will only leave you disappointed when said party eventually reveals they weren't their ideas to begin with.
Welcome to GOG! Glad to see more and more people switching from Steam.

DRM-free is the way.

Don't forget to check these links first. :)

comradegarry: While I've been on gog for a while, I now feel the time has truly come as well to quit steam completely. The only thing stopping me at this very moment is I want to play some games I never got around to play but after that(which it will be today) I'm promptly getting rid of steam, uninstalling all games and not going back.

Randalator: What's the point if you still have games on it you'd like to play? Valve already got the money for it, they don't make money off you playing them. Might as well enjoy them and just refuse to give them any more cash...
Honestly the only games I like on steam (the ones that aren't DRM-Free on humble bundle) are:
Valve Games(HL1,HL2(beat it),TF2(tired of it and too many hats..),CSGO(can't run it well),Portal 2(beat it))
Crusader Kings 2 (crashes when I load or launch a game, and all the DLC is getting on my nerves at this point)
Metro LL (beat it)
Civ 5 (sucks compared to SMAC(IMO) but ok just not worth having steam for)

I really do like Vampires the Masquerade bloodlines too but I can use non-steam .exe to bypass that :)

I just get tired of their crap all the time and their no return policy. And do I really OWN my games and content there or is it just a license agreement? I need to use their product (steam client) to USE/play games, without that I have no games.

EDIT: reply - I just don't want to waste the hard drive space :)

Welcome, welcome! It's really heartening to have more and more company, over time! Glad to see people are reasonable and rational and react as they should, when they get forcibly abused and/or betrayed by a service that they invested money, faith and too much time in! Too bad though you spent so much money on those SCAMMERS...

As i said in the past, Valve has a potential to hit rock bottom to minus infinite and their late decisions are only the start of the sh*tstorm! First was the forceful updates to remove in-game content from Vice City and San Andreas! Then the prohibition of account to account game trading from different places! And now the paying mods, wow! Imagine that my tower of popcorn bucket and bucket 'o cola have not even reached middle, the show is on and running!

GoG will pay for itself, you will see... EVERYTHING is DRM-FREE (you buy it you keep it), with NO restrictions such as verifications, always on, certain number of installations etc, nothing of that cr*p! No client to hound the games (galaxy is optional and will be mostly for achievements and socializing), forums are amazing full of great people (not me!) and long story short, here the place is outstanding! Updates are in most cases optional with patch released extra... And on discounted sales, games are sold almost as cheaply as in Steam! Add in the occasional giveaway for a chance to win something you like and this is like a dream!

Wish you a pleasant and permanent stay! Also, please please, PM me to tell me, just WHERE is your avatar from? (always on the lookout for new media to watch or read)

Better late than never.
Welcome to GOG and may the GOG bear be with you.
You should definitely try the Gothic series. :-D
If I may suggest something, I believe we should have a surprise Insomnia Sale to greet our new friends :)
I think people overreact a little bit too much with that paid mod thing, I will still use both like I used to, but it's a good thing that you joined because gog is indeed a great alternative.

Austin_4e: Hello everyone. I just wanted to say I had not heard of GOG until recently, but was absolutely blown away when I heard there was a storefront comparable to Steam (price wise) and that they were going to release a DRM-free client at some point.

So the short of it, I was PLANNING on having GOG Galaxy as a complement to Steam for whatever games weren't Steam-exclusive, but after this absolutely asinine paid mods nonsense I jumped 100% on board with GOG.

Completely uninstalled Steam with no remorse. I'm planning on slowly rebuilding parts of my library on GOG over time. Already saw a few great classics I want to pick up like Psychonauts, Legacy of Kain, etc. Might get Witcher III too.

Basically after seeing how low Valve could stoop I basically just wanted to say, thank you for existing at this moment. Hopefully this is a cool community and I plan on convincing as many people as I can to, at the very least, look over GOG and weigh their options.

Cheers!
Welcome here, GoG is the only place for me, where I am buying my PC games. Unfortunately most of the JRPGs, which is my favourite genre, are still console exclusive, but GoG is doing good to bring them here as well :)

There's something cool in your PM to help you build your library.
Welcome to GOG, Austin_4e.

Which goes to prove that DRM-free is pretty meaningless. I often think that the value of owned games is near zero. If someone is willing to let go of a games library, then the value of being able to keep games forever is near zero too.

At first I also felt people were overreacting, but if you ever cared about modding, or skyrim modding in this case - others soon to follow - you would understand the destructive impact this has on modding. Nexus mods is already falling apart with people removing their mods from there, afraid of having their mods stolen and sold for money, others are forced to put their mods for sale on the workshop for the same reasons. You can imagine which other impacts it will have. Modding will never be the same again, and this is only the beginning.

I don't want to say goodbye to my Steam library completely but Steam is trying really hard to make me ragequit completely also.

Anyway, welcome, OP! Bring your whole family. ;)
