We are using computers to write text, so I propose we talk in binary code, the language of computers.

johnnygoging: People are seeing those reviews and the Russian characters and voting them down out of spite/shame of their own ignorance/conformance to upholding and discrimination, possible willful, against Russian stereotypes.
Wow. Such discrimination. Feel so oppressed. :^( Man, there are Spanish, Deutsch, French reviews, they are downvoted as well, no way it's something anti-Russian. GOG is mostly English site, so it's understandable that people want to see reviews in English. People are still free to publish reviews in their native languages, but they should expect to be downvoted, until GOG will introduce some separation of reviews based on their language.

Well, computers used to write text in ASCII, which was one representation of binary; however, that has changed over time.

JDelekto: Especially if you take the first and move it like a production chain through the other three.... :)
I remember choosing random words in spanish, traslating them into random languages and reverting back to spanish... No comment XD

Do you what I use GT mostly for? Writing spanish dirty words under "english" and then listening to them with that robot british accent. Good 'ol fun.

Well, I'll say this --GOG is trying to go global and I think it works well since there were "Good Old Games" in every area of the world. It wasn't like English speaking persons were the first to create games.

I think that it was great that GOG was able to offer games from publishers in other parts of the world; I think that by showing disrespect to people who originally played that game in their own culture is just rude.

johnnygoging: Oh I'm the bad guy?
Nope. You sound well-intentioned.

Still, I don't think we're going to convince each other. You attribute to malice what I see as a negative consequence of design. But we seem to agree that the system could be implemented better. I can live with that.

Sorry if I irked you.

I say we use punch cards and send them over snail mail.

or how about 110 baud coupler modems sending over green bar paper.
"GOG expands into new territories ... but don't go using the website's features, now!"

paladin181: I'll stop downvoting useless reviews when they stop being useless. The question is: Did you find this review helpful? No, I couldn't understand the writing. It's not my place to determine how useful a post will be to someone else, they need to do that, just like I do. If everyone votes up the useful reviews, then the system works a lot better.
You could just don't downvote it and just upvote those you understand and find helpful.

What's the problem with people not accepting foreign languages?
GOG should reset the votes and filter them by language.

Well, I could see a can of worms opening up here. You have several scenarios at play here: a) total review and how it's calculated; and b) the text of the review.

I think if one could see a 'total' review among all languages, that would be helpful. I think if one could filter reviews based on culture, that would be great too. I think if one could be presented with a 'grid' of cultures and their reviews, that would even be better.

But honestly, if I see the video and screenshots of a game I like, look at what languages it supports and system requirements, if I like it, I'll buy the game, without creating much drama about a review.
Answering "Is this review helpful?" with a "No" if you don't understand the language strikes me as being against the spirit of the feature even if it falls within the letter of it. As I see it, a review in a language that I don't understand isn't helpful or unhelpful, it's just... there.

Or to look at it another way, I don't read most of the English-language reviews posted for a game, but I don't mark them as unhelpful because of that.

That would be too easy.
