Seems like they forgot to add that owners receive their money back. Sarcasm(off);

They make a strong point not to buy anything from their store anymore, because you can never be sure when an item becomes deprecated or is taken away while still keeping your money.

That's why I would never "buy" online only movies.
It's the same with Amazon Prime, btw.

A few months ago (during lockdown), I was thinking, whether I should buy one of the newly released movies there, who wasn't available as DVD/BR yet.

But, as I'm a cautious customer, I first checked the rights I would have after purchase.

Here's what I found out: the movies you "buy" there?
They have the right to deny you access, as soon as their license agreements run out. Just like Sony/PS.

That's why I buy my games from GOG. DRM-free.
And that's why I buy movies only on physical media.
No "after-puchase-restrictions-of-use" with movies on physical media.

There is this thing called physical media. It's a wonderful thing.

This is why I never bought anything on Amazon Prime. They flat out say if/when the licensing agreement ends, you lose access to stuff you purchased FOR THE SAME PRICE AS THE PHYSICAL MEDIA. So buy Physical media whenever possible, because that can't be revoked, yet.

Theoretically you could, firmware update could stop you playing a disc. Moving to a different region. There isn’t really a fail safe, just ways of limiting your exposure.
It suprised by this, everything is rental now, brought on credit, sold by economies propped up by nothing, just keep it all moving fast enough otherwise it will all collapse.

This is certainly an example of the doomsday scenario a lot of us DRM Free fans fear, where digital content can be removed. But there is also the discussion, as it is here, of whether any media is truly permanent anyway. It's tough to see where the smart money would be further down the road.

It's almost like you have to be rich to own anything these days. It's almost like corporations pick your pocket and call it a good deal. It's almost like there are no rules to keep that in check. And then we wonder why there's so much dysfunction in society when the thieves call themselves rulers.

Not necessarily. Physical media is infested with DRM.

And a lot of times, modern OSes have disabled that DRM from working and thus make the physical media which contains that DRM useless and non-functional.

Plus, disc-based movies often only work in certain regions and/or on certain devices that happen to be compatible with that exact version type of the disc.

And even if physical media has zero DRM in it, then it still doesn't last forever anyway. Eventually, the data on it will decay simply through natural processes, and the physical media which used to hold that data will therefore have become totally useless.

You will own nothing.

It's possible to make backups. Or "format shift" it (ie, store floppy disc games as zip files or CD-ROM's as .ISO files on backup HDD's that can be mounted as a virtual drive. Either way, it's still better than anything with a remote kill-switch (online DRM & streaming in a nutshell) or nothing at all (where do I 'digitally' buy NOLF or Dune?) As for their lifespan, I still have some of the earliest Audio CD's from the mid-1980's that play fine after nearly 40 years so the rate of decay of pressed optical discs is regularly heavily over-exaggerated.

Agree 100% with buying physical media.

Sony has already instituted a clock "check-in" on PS3 that disables downloaded games if the "check-in" isn't completed (and the chip used for "check-in" tends to have a quite limited lifespan). It's thought that the PS4 might have similar and disable physical media as well. Sony hasn't been forthcoming with a patch, but individuals are creating workarounds... although then there are TOS issues.

The state of ownership ATM is quite sad.
