Distrowatch is a pretty good place to start :)

By booting from a thumb drive, you can easily change distros till you settle on one that suits.

That's good approach.
I've checked dozens of distros by simply putting them on pendrive and booting them for live session. It's also the way I've fallen in love with Linux - years ago, after seeing how my old desktop looks and works under Ubuntu, I never came back to slow, ugly and messy prison of Windows :D

Using pendrive costs you nothing and also creates absolutely no risk, which makes it really good point to start. But remember that installed system works even faster and smoother then during live session ;)
Thank you for giveaway! :)

Just used this, chose daily usage and supported by game manufacturers, the only distributions that cover both were linux mint and ubuntu, is this right?

From discussions with my own clients, yes. Mint probably over Ubuntu. Seems to be more UI oriented.
Thank you for the giveaway. I'd like to be in for:

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
+1 for another great giveaway from a generous GOGer. Thank you! (not in).

I moved to Linux fulltime some ten years ago now (after having dabbled around the edges of it for a further couple of years). I chose Linux because it allows to to change anything I want to change (while stuff I don't want to change, just works), respects my freedom and privacy, and above all provides the best possible guarantee that I'll still be able to usefully access my data decades down the road. Oh, and of course the developing tooling is unparalleled. Ubuntu is my chosen distribution. I hate many decisions they've made since the end of Gnome 2 (though many of those were rather forced on them by gnome 2 being abandoned) - yet I stick to Ubuntu because the essential parts actually work together well, and are thoroughly tested and thought out (my experience with Mint there is significantly worse), so that I can just forget about it as it all Just Works, and only have to focus on tweaking things I actually care about tweaking.

And then the best thing about Ubuntu is that LTS releases are supported for 5 years. With that many years of stability, I'm mostly okay with the pain of reconfiguring everything (I find) import to actually work as I want after I'm finally forced to upgrade.
