Grargar: Unfortunately, with Sony as the current licensee, it might be years before we even see a new Spider-Man game on PC, let alone one of the old ones.
i think their current license only affected '' marvel's spider-man by insomniac '' not every spider-man or marvel games in general

I own a PS4 and I never paid a single cent for online features.
Granted, I play single-player games only, so...if that's something you can live with / restrict yourself to...it's not really expensive.
And...you can re-sell your console games when you're through...try that with today's PC games. ;)

Alexim: Does Sony also have rights to the games? From what I knew outside of the movies, the rights are always of Marvel, and therefore of Disney.
Marvel is not a gaming publisher. That's why they licensed their stuff to companies such as Activision and Capcom. When a license for a specific game expires, the game doesn't magically become Marvel's property, as the publisher usually retains a variable degree of control. What happens when you can't/don't want to grant a new license to that publisher? Simple. Their licensed games get stuck in legal limbo.

I never mentioned anything about other Marvel games; only about Spider-Man. And since Marvel has parted ways with their 15+years-old Spider-Man licensee, Activision, the fate of the old games is that they will likely remain unreleased for years to come. As for Sony, I doubt they would be content with securing licensing for just one game (especially since they know how much Marvel wants Spider-Man in the Cinematic Universe). They would probably want some exclusivity deal for a number of years, during which time any new Spider-Man game would be released exclusively on Playstation consoles.

Right, but do you know if the situation with the Star Wars games is similar or with the now dead LucasArts the dynamics are different?

If there is the will and GOG took care of the ports for modern devices there would be some hope? After all, we're talking about world-renowned franchises, not a few unknown indie games.
Even with infinite lives cheat, I never managed to beat https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwC0slfDvSY (always got stuck at "Great drain robbery").

But I didn't care. Awesome game.

Not the same situation. LucasArts both developed and published Star Wars games. Thus, all the rights of the games were within the company itself.

For games that already available on Steam (like Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3), they could try to convince the publisher into bringing their game here. For others, the best they could do is nudge the publisher into signing a new licensing agreement with the license-holder. If the two parties can't reach an agreement, then there is nothing they can do.
