Back in the day, my sister used to have the same problem and she asked me how I wasn't bothered by it. I told her, "You got to 'unfocus' your eyes. Look at the total picture instead of just one part of it."

I still can't play the later Ultimas for too long before succumbing to nausea-inducing vertigo, though. Something about that perspective is whack and makes me feel upside-down :P
I get it too sometimes. Just like in a car you need to occasionally focus on something that is not moving, like a HUD item

Cyraxpt: Eh, since it's when i'm moving towards objects i would say it's that.

tinyE: Good thing you're too young for Kid Icarus.
avatar
Cyraxpt: I'm older than Kid Icarus and isn't that a 2D plataform game? Or are you making a joke about that 3DS one?
avatar
Grargar: Does this only occur with sprite-based FPS? Or also with other older FPS like Quake or Unreal? If you use a polygonal mod for Doom/Duke Nukem 3D, does it still occur?
avatar
Cyraxpt: Can't say since i usually don't play those games but i was ok playing Duke Nukem 3D a few years ago (3 maybe) and i didn't had any problem, it only started with the example that i gave, more "recent" games like Quake or Unreal (again, i did play that new quake arena game recently) i also don't had any problem.

Maybe it's because i'm playing in the console and it's the fov with resolution but when approaching objects or doors it makes it worse.

Nirth: Is the Field of View different? I had too high when I played Far Cry 2 and it's the only FPS that caused motion sickness to me. Age of Conan did too but I believe it was more because of lack of taking breaks, food and sleep (never doing that again).

Cyraxpt: Well, it's on console so yes but then again, i don't have any problem with the rest of the game.
XD Didn't realize your age, I'm sorry. I was referring to the NES one that got so much flack for causing seizures. All games get that but for some reason Kid Icarus became the poster boy for it. Maybe someone in here knows exactly why it got picked on more than others.
Try to ramp up Field of view, it might help. Back in the days I couldn't play Dark forces for more than an hour without getting sick, more recently I felt it on Borderlands to a lesser extent, boosting field of view made things way better.
I think that i kind of figured out, like i said, it's the 3D simulation of objects that is making me dizzy, since the game is running at 60 fps the objects movement is faster than in the old games (i was watching a video of Wolfenstein 3D and it didn't affect me, the framerate looked like it was low, 20 something?).

I'm done with those levels, if i didn't had to look for keys maybe i would speedrun them but screw it, i don't even care for trophies/achievements.
Its usually DOS games and games like Descent 1 and 2 that make me feel nauseated.

Next gen games like Call of Duty or Crysis 2 have no bad effect on me.
The first time I had motion sickness in an fps game was when I tried Dead Island about 2 years ago. Weird occurrence and I play a lot of fps games.

Not sure what caused it but most probably was the head bobbing.
Games with headbobbing/fake shaky make me shaky.
