I don't know, i've been playing for more than 20 years and the first fps of this type that i've played was Alien Trilogy, i'm talking those games where you approach an object and he moves to simulate the 3D (when in fact it's a "cardboard") but back then i didn't had this problem.

My head starts getting "heavy"/dizzy and slowly starting to hurt, i'm assuming this is motion sickness and i find it funny because it only happens with these games (the last time was Severance Blade of Darkness).

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

I'm playing W:TOB and they had the idea of putting one of these levels in each chapter, at least is optional but for those hunting trophies/achievements you have to play them. I'm not doing that since that stuff ruinned my enjoyment on past games (DE HR) but i'm a bit pissed with this, this was for me the worst level on Wolfenstein The New Order, i got nauseous and i had to stop playing for a while to regain myself.

*End of spoilers*

So does anyone know why it only happens with these old fps?

It's called "Motion Sickness" .
According to The Guardian it's estimated between 10-50% of people may experience motion sickness while gaming to some degree.

It's speculated that it's caused in video gaming by a disconnect between your eyes detecting motion on the screen while your inner ear has no such luck (because, you know, you're not actually moving).

This might trick your body into thinking it's being poisoned, which triggers a nausea reflex.

So how do you fix the problem? Well, there's no cure, but as The Guardian's helpful test subject notes, over-the-counter motion sickness medication can either delay or alleviate the effects slightly.

This may help!

Does this only occur with sprite-based FPS? Or also with other older FPS like Quake or Unreal? If you use a polygonal mod for Doom/Duke Nukem 3D, does it still occur?

Good thing you're too young for Kid Icarus.
Hey, it's a good method to torture people !
Pick up Descent and play it for an hour or so and let us know how you feel.

Oh god.
Not only did you get motion sickness, you get vertigo, and you get lost.
Is the Field of View different? I had too high when I played Far Cry 2 and it's the only FPS that caused motion sickness to me. Age of Conan did too but I believe it was more because of lack of taking breaks, food and sleep (never doing that again).

amrit9037: Snip
Eh, since it's when i'm moving towards objects i would say it's that.

I'm older than Kid Icarus and isn't that a 2D plataform game? Or are you making a joke about that 3DS one?

Can't say since i usually don't play those games but i was ok playing Duke Nukem 3D a few years ago (3 maybe) and i didn't had any problem, it only started with the example that i gave, more "recent" games like Quake or Unreal (again, i did play that new quake arena game recently) i also don't had any problem.

Maybe it's because i'm playing in the console and it's the fov with resolution but when approaching objects or doors it makes it worse.

Well, it's on console so yes but then again, i don't have any problem with the rest of the game.

Could you retry playing Duke Nukem 3D on your PC and see if it gives you motion sickness now?

Lol, i played it on 360 back then but yeah, i download the pc version (i didn't even know i had it on gog) and i didn't had any problem but the game has more detail than the game that i mentioned, at least has more stuff on the screen and not only those cardboards items simulating 3D.

I think it's a mixture of those empty rooms with those items, the fov and the framerate.

I see. Interesting selective motion sickness. :P
Motion Sickness like that sucks...

My first encounter with motion sicknes was actually Wolfenstein 3D, many, many years ago. After i told my parents that i got sick i was not allowed to play for two months ;)

The one game though that i regret not being able to play is Half Life 2. I got so sick I had to stop before i left the starting area. Portal and Portal 2 have the same effect, even when i watch Youtube videos.
At the beginning i was also struggling a bit with Borderlands, but the effect was not as severe and i was able to complete it.

Unreal Tournament on the other hand never caused any issues for me.

Do you perhaps play with headphones occasionally? I've had this weird thing from time to time where I start to feel kinda sick/dizzy when I play 1st/3d person games for extended periods of time, and whenever that happens I immediately start to feel better when I take them off. It also never happens when I'm playing without headphones. I'm using really good headphones as well so I doubt whether they are to blame.

One final thing. Are you perhaps in the habit of playing in a really dark room? That also sometimes messes me up a bit. Playing with a small light source somewhere close by tends to help.

edit: Forgot to mention: the only game I've ever played that definitely gave me motion sickness was Prey. Portal never gave me issues, but I had to stop playing Prey because those weird inverted walkways were messing me up.

I bet your too old to remember this because this is what I think when people say they are nauseous:
