morolf: On a serious note, locking people away for 20 years for that seems a bit harsh, but I'd definitely be in favour of an extreme fine. Such people also should have their iphone (or however these things are called) taken away and smashed with a hammer into tiny pieces.
The bit about fines seems good, and I agree 100%.

In one of the cases in the US (in Texas? can't remember) there actually was some talk that a woman who licked ice cream in a shop could face up to 20 years in prison for that...so that at least doesn't just come from my imagination.

I know, that's why I went with it. I'm too lazy to look up statistics to support my own hyperbolic point though.

It's an interesting thought though...iirc that woman supposedly had the flu...now imagine someone bought that ice cream and got sick from it, or even died from it (not impossible for elderly people or those who already are sickly)...should such an ice cream licker by sentenced for involuntary manslaughter then?

I disagree btw that they should get huge jail terms(as some want) but this is a dumb way to get attention(people will and have been getting caught) and is all sorts of wrong.
Mental illness is becoming increasingly prevalent, and isn't at all surprising considering the degradation of our leaders.
Our societies our coming apart at the seams.

I think it's more to do with the dumbing down of people via social media and the massive attention one gets for stupid things via the net.

I guess the judge/DA would look at various things like first offense(yes/no) and other factors when determining what sentence to hand down.

Also how is a small thread on the matter going to give them much in the way of attention(good or bad)?

And fwiw i'd rather we(humanity/etc) find ways to deal with such instead of just ignoring them as we do other things.
