So I am one of the folks here that still owns this game on GOG before it got pulled from its store library. But as I am running the game I have a problem with resolution.

The game does run in 1920x1080, but the screen is letterboxed. As in Black bars covering the up and down corners of the screen. As if I was watching a DVD/Blu-Ray movie in Widescreen.

I checked PC Gaming Wiki and so far I haven't found a solution that works. Even the download links they offered me don't work anymore.

Anyone know what to do here?

Have you tried changing the Pixel Aspect option in the options?

"Riddick has an interesting "Pixel Aspect" option in the video menu that has the ability to alter the image to display in other aspect ratios, but it uses stretching to accomplish this. This can be used to remove the black bars in the image, but only by distoring the image slightly. The option is mostly used for display devices with abstract aspect ratios."

Someone on Steam shared this solution. They tested on Escape from Butcher Bay only, though, but it might work on both games.

Hi i've actually managed to get it working for Escape from Butcher Bay. I'm assuming it'll also work for Assault on Dark Athena but I haven't tried it yet myself.

What i've done is the following...

Start the game and turn all your in-game settings up.

Enable 'View Hidden Folders' in Windows then navigate to AppData -> Local -> Atari -> The Chronicles of Riddick - Assault on Dark Athena -> Environment. In there you'll need to change the 'VID_DWIDTH' & 'VID_DHEIGHT' to your monitors full screen value. Mine is 1920x1080 so it says VID_DWIDTH=1920 and VID_DHEIGHT=1080.

Download a programme called Fullscreensizer [runtimelegend.com]. You don't have to install this programme, just double-click it and it'll run.

Run Fullscreensizer and start your game. When you get to the main menu, tab out and re-fresh Fullscreensizer, you should see Riddick running. Simply select Riddick from the list and click 'Fullscreensize' and you should be set.

The download links on PCGamingWiki were for removing the black bars in non-16:9 resolution, so that's not what you want anyway.

If you typed your resolution into the Environment.cfg file and still have the wrong thing then maybe try marking it "read only" in the properties menu.

That does nothing either.

And really all it does it makes it read me meaning I can't edit it.

And now I feel stupid.

Although the game kinda looks a bit too "squished?" Like characters look thinner then they are supposed to.

But its something I can get used to.

Glad it worked, to some extent :) I've recently been thinking of installing the game myself so I have to keep this in mind

For me (2560x1440(16:9)), setting Pixel Aspect to Normal gives a good result. The default setting (Auto) stretches the screen.

Weird thing: Both FRAPS and Afterburner show 20 FPS (stable). I have a GTX970, so that should be a lot higher. None of the Video settings make a difference, setting CPU affinity doesn't help, Threaded optimisation in Nvidia settings doesn't do anything either.
It's not that much of an issue - I don't know if I'm really playing at 20 FPS, but it plays pretty fluently to me...

Open "Environment.cfg" (located in C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\AppData\Local\Atari\The Chronicles of Riddick - Assault on Dark Athena) and make sure that VID_DWIDTH and VID_DHEIGHT are set to the correct values (same resolution as VID_MODE).

I did check out that, and they are set to the right values. Actually, even if I set the game to the lowest resolution - It still displays 20 FPS.

What's the last number listed under VID_MODE?

VID_MODE=2560 1440 32 60

Hmm then it should definitely go up to 60 fps without a problem. Is Vsync set to on?

On or off, it doesn't make a difference.
It's a weird issue. I thought 20 FPS would look a lot more 'choppy', but it doesn't.

Here's a video, made with afterburner:

Does that look like 20 FPS to you? (see top left corner)

If it's not choppy it could be that Fraps & Afterburner are just displaying a wrong framerate. I made a screenshot with Bandicam. The framerate shown is the one set under VID_MODE (2560 1440 32 144).
