GOG hero details revealed • D:OS 2 releasing September 14

The complete release of Divinity: Original Sin 2 is drawing very near, releasing September 14 on GOG.com

There are many reasons to anticipate the release, including the opportunity to encounter one character in particular – designed, inspired by, and chosen with the GOG.com community – a fully voiced NPC with a unique backstory, and her own share of secrets...

A hero's journey
For backing the D:OS 2 Kickstarter campaign, we were given the chance to work with Larian Studios on a unique in-game NPC: the GOG hero. And because the more is the merrier, the entire GOG.com community would get to be a part of the process from the start.
Beginning with a forum-wide brainstorm and a series of art and writing contests, the GOG community would draw, doodle, pitch, and design countless ideas for Larian Studios to take to the drawing board.
Months later, three designs would be revealed by the studio and the finalists put to the community's vote.
In the end, it was Eithne – an undead librarian, merchant of rare and arcane knowledge – who emerged the clear winner with 59% of all votes. She became the official GOG hero made possible by the community!

Meet the hero
Divinity: Original Sin 2 is releasing soon, and it's a thrill to finally meet Eithne!
Check out the teaser trailer for a taste of the character and voice acting in action. Plus, we got to briefly talk with Charlene Putney, the writer behind Eithne – you can read more of it below!

But the best way to meet Eithne is in-game during your adventures (regardless of platform). We can't wait to see her ourselves and want to give big thanks to Larian Studios for the opportunity, and to our entire community for being a part the creative process!

See the trailer for Eithne

Here are some extra tidbits of info from Charlene "Char" Putney, the writer for Eithne:

1. Without venturing into spoiler territory, can you tell us how soon or late in the game we'll first encounter Eithne?
Eithne wanders in an area quite a ways past where the current Early Access stops. Without spoiling anything, I can tell you that she lurks in a ruined building in a forested area of Reaper's Coast.

2. What can we expect from Eithne in terms of stock?
Well, as voted for by the good people of GOG, Eithne is an Undead Librarian, so you can expect her initial stock to reflect that character! I have other things I'd like to say about this... but I'll keep my mouth shut for now!

3. You are the one who brought Eithne to life: tell us a bit about the creation process. What is your favourite thing about her?
The thing I like most about her is something I can't say, as it would definitely be a spoiler! But what I can say is that I like the story of where she comes from and how she came to be who she is now.

Panzergoob: .... do you have the option for a refund? She looks god awful.
Refunding such an amazing game just for an npc you don't like the looks of? Uh well, okay then.

I think he means GOG's 10K for having a character they designed in the game.

I think GOG saw the char first and if they didn't like it they would've said so. It is said they would work together with the 10k backer to make it. So I guess GOG thinks it's fine. :) I mean it's just an NPC in the end.

I'm sure they don't mind at all. Thinking about it I don't remember any characters from the first game having things like backpacks so it may just be a limitation of the engine that means that wasn't possible.

As I said above, I'm fairly sure they were far more interested in the Title credit advertising space then any of the other extras.
She looks fine. The initial character idea and concept art are the starting point of the design, with the execution over the course of development being dependent on how the idea matures and what can be done with means available to you. The concept art looking cooler than the eventual in-game model is to be expected because that always happens if your artists are any good, even now with all the graphical tricks we can do. Calling her to a disappointment before we get to the bits that matter, what she's like in-game, is rather premature.

I don't think that applies to anything else than the development of the initial concept for the NPC which is, understandably so, always liable to change. Obviously, Larian has the final say in the matter even if GOG is allowed to voice its opinion upon seeing the final version.

By the way, I really hope GOG chooses Theodore 'GOGBear' Fourofourski for the 'Painting of Your Likeness In-Game'. He is the perfectly fuzzy and beloved embodiment of the (buggy) nature of GOG if ever there was one!
Alternatively, I cast my vote for Marcin Iwiński (the third iteration - Ghost of the Year Edition).

Considering shes a skeleton you can expect the armor being empty (unless someone starts goofing around with resurrection spells). But since shes a she (even if undead) she picked an outfit made for woman.

Other than that: Yeah, the two looks are extremely different.
After discussing this a bit with my pal Vythonaut, perhaps the proposed design depicts her as she was before she went through the process of becoming undead?

Do most people read the credits in detail instead of briefly skimming them?

It's not in the credits though, it's on the title screen. So every time anyone loads up the game they will see it.
That's what I understand anyway, I've yet to install and play the game myself as I doubt my laptop will run it.

Missed the "title screen" bit; makes sense in this case.

Shendue: Meh. Way to kill a fantastic design.
I don't see the point in asking the community then ignore their submission almost entirely and redesign it completely.
Just don't ask anything and make directly the NPC you want, then.

CharlesGrey: I'm starting to suspect it may have simply been an issue of money and required work hours. Upon closer inspection, the in-game version of the character doesn't seem to have any unique art assets. It looks like they simply used standard models/textures from the rest of the game, instead of giving her a unique model and animations. Kinda disappointing, when compared to the original 2D design.
1) Bring up standard female model adding basic clothing and hair.
2) Make human head invisible and attach a skeleton's head and neck where the human head is.
3)...?
4) 10k profit.

To be fair, she does seem to have a unique questline/story and voice acting. ( Unique in the sense that it has been created specifically for this character; I don't know if it's actually good. ) But yeah... It's kinda underwhelming.
Reminds me of Charla from D:OS EE, she is an undead at the beach.
A skeleton with huge boobs.

What a shame :D
low rated
really?! make a special post about EIthne? To me she was just anothe mob, nothing special about her (nesides having breast being a skeleton, but I guess a talking walking skeleton is just as absurd just more so with LAGE breasts) tal to her for a few dialog lines, find the book and off she goes, never to be seen again. What's so exciting or special about that?
