karnak1: Shame that we still haven't got Mafia 1 on GOG, though. :(
It's one of the best games I've ever played.
^This.
Mafia 1 is definitely one of the best games I've ever played as well.

omega64: Is Mafia 1 actually worth playing?
I loved the second for the storyline, didn't really like the gameplay.
Mafia 1 is a masterpiece of storytelling. I didn't like Mafia 2 because of the storyline lol.

Navagon: The soundtrack was also perfect. Does make me wonder what happened to the sequel. Technically it was there. But the... soul wasn't.

karnak1: I suppose there were some development problems.
Daniel Vavra had been the creative soul of the first game. He left the studio after Mafia 2.
I suppose he's trying to accomplish in CRPGs (with Kingdom Come) the sort of experience he had previously attained with the first Mafia game.
Kingdom Come Deliverance? That always looked too ambitious to me. But if it's got some real talent behind it then it might just work.

If you look carefully at the game's updates you'll notice that the game isn't as ambitious (megalomaniac) as it may appear at first sight.
Honestly, it seems to be a more "story-focused Skyrim". Imagine Skyrim divided into chapters, with a more streamlined approach. The same way that Mafia 1 was GTA3 with chapters.

If they manage to mantain a good balance between open-world and linear narrative it may really work.

Plus, their budget does seem to not only be suitable for a project of that scale* and it seems to be growing too. That does give me some confidence. Time will tell, I suppose. Sometimes something comes along like that and looks amazing. But then you play it and it's all kinds of broken. Hopefully they'll stay funded long enough to polish it.

Alternatively, if I'm reading you right, they could always release it episodically.

*assuming that they're keeping staffing levels low and probably have some kind of profit share scheme instead of decent up front pay.

Exactly!
This game is supposed to be part 1 of a series. If the first game sells well enough they intend to continue with the next chapters.
Sweet! I hope the city of Empire Bay will be a bit more lively this time around.

Awesome. I love Mafia 2. Great game. One of the best games I've ever played. Too bad, the first game had those horrible missions that require you to drive around the city, totally ruining the game.
