It seems that Mafia 3 is in the works.

Shame that we still haven't got Mafia 1 on GOG, though. :(
It's one of the best games I've ever played.

I know, every time I read about the Mafia games always reminds me of how great the first one was and its not on GOG or sold on any other digital distribution stores for that matter. I am still hoping that GOG will get 2K as the next big publisher and then we might finally get to see Mafia 1 again.

Is Mafia 1 actually worth playing?
I loved the second for the storyline, didn't really like the gameplay.

Honestly, I think it's one of the best games in history.
Sure, the gameplay is a bit dated. But it has one of the best stories I've seen in a videogame. Makes you really care about the characters. And its' really immersive.

It's like GTA3, without the stupidity.

Ah, Mafia, one of my favorite games. To bad the second was such crap. I own it but couldn't force myself to finish it so I just watched a let's play of it to go through the story.

I would like a proper Mafia 3 to be made. To me it's seems surprising that more games don't take place in that setting, and when they do, they are lacking.

As karnak1 said, the gameplay at the time was actually innovative but not intuitive like shooting from the cars for example but the storyline is definitely one of the best that I have ever experienced in a video game. I was really invested in the main character and the accurately portrayed era with impressive world building. Definitely worth it if you enjoyed the second game.

You have an open world. You can drive where you want and kill random people.
Alas, you cannot kill people until the army sends a tank at you. GTA3 didn't have many things to do, unlike the following games.

Mafia was also more linear, since it was divided into chapters. GTA was basically a parody, while Mafia wanted to tell a story.
Mafia 1 is a masterpiece. I loved that game. It still holds up well thanks to the attention to detail it had. I know a lot of the cars were slow, but damn, those things were far superior (as elements of game design) than anything in any racing game of the time by a mile.

Add to that a damn fine bit of storytelling, realistic police and just generally brilliance across the board and yes, you do have one of the best games ever made.

It's a real shame that Mafia 2 could in theory, so easily have been its equal, yet fell so far short in practice.
And let's not forget those wonderful Django Reinhardt's pieces in the score.

The soundtrack was also perfect. Does make me wonder what happened to the sequel. Technically it was there. But the... soul wasn't.

The very same soundtrack might have contributed to the game's removal from Steam. Even if Take-Two Interactive made a deal with GOG, there is no guarantee that Mafia 1 would be released here. Even if it was released, it might no longer contain the licensed soundtrack.

I suppose there were some development problems.
Daniel Vavra had been the creative soul of the first game. He left the studio after Mafia 2.
I suppose he's trying to accomplish in CRPGs (with Kingdom Come) the sort of experience he had previously attained with the first Mafia game.

If you liked Mafia 2, you will love Mafia 1. It is similar, yet far better. Mafia 2 was fun, but the reason why many diss it, was that it fell short of the high expectations that Mafia 1 raised. Especially if you like games for their story, Mafia 1 is for you. It was a story heavy-weight with awesome characters and voice acting.
Mafia 2 was real good. Have yet to play the original game on Steam. I'll get there.
