You seem to be looking for PC games only, but just in case: the original SNES Final Fantasies (IV, V and VI) and also FFIX all had local co-op, believe it or not. That includes the SNES versions of IV-VI and the PSX versions of V and VI available on the Playstation Network. That's the only legal way to get a multiplayer version of FFV in English.

FFIV is a little more freeform about it, in that both players control the party as they please (the feature isn't even mentioned in the game). FFV, VI and IX let you assign party members to specific players.

(If you do take to playing FFVI, I'm seeing a warning here that the other player should not touch any buttons when their partner is using Sabin's Blitz command, as it will cause it to fail no matter what.)

Tarm: I can't really argue your point besides pointing to the topic subject because the OP edited his/her post and I can't remember what it said before the edit. Writing what the edit did is important forum etiquette I think.
I'm sorry, I corrected that and added a description for my edit. I didn't think it necessacry for such a small edit.

Hmmm... sounds interesting. What about the Steam version of FF4? It doesn't state local coop in the sidebar, could you confirm if this works?

Maybe we should demand GIT version control to the community wishlist so you can see the hist log of each post :'D
As long as your edits do not severely alter the meaning of your post, there is absolutely no need to add commit messages. This is no large scale software development project.
But that's just my opinion.
If you can step away from the coop thing and feel satisfied with making decisions together, you could go for Shadowrun. Turn Based Combat and gameplay focus on a really really good story.

Sadly it won't in that version. FFIV on Steam is a direct port of a smartphone game (which was a port of DS game) and as a result is single-player only.

I don't suppose you have a Wii or Wii U? I don't get the impression that you do, but I realized I forgot to mention them, so just in case. I forgot to mention that FFIV and VI are also on the Wii Virtual Console, under their original western titles of Final Fantasy II and III (long story).

If you don't, sorry, I guess I wasn't much help. Maybe one day they'll port FFIX, I know there's an audience clamouring for it.

If it helps, my buddy and I play RPGs all the time, passing off the controller like jdsgn is suggesting, but as a result, I also know that's not the same. Good luck in your search!

I guess one could also take turns in combat, letting another control one or more party members. But I don't think it could be played on a couch with gamepad? Tablet and couch could work.

Agreed! That seems like a good idea to me (and is something I actually do a lot when playing with my brother).

jdsgn: Tach zusammen.

Maybe Torchlight 2?
It's a shame that this one isn't on GOG, so you'd have to go for Steam. Please click here to vote for TL2 to appear here.

Or maybe Trine or Trine 2? They're both here on GOG.

Leroux: Neither of those is turn-based though, even if they could be considered somewhat relaxed because of their comparatively easy difficulty and only mild penalties for dying. General suggestions for coop RPG-likes wouldn't be that difficult, but I have a hard time coming up with turn-based coop games for the PC that can be played with a gamepad ... :/
Maybe IWD2 if you want?

Can't be played with a gamepad, can it?
