Torchlight 2

Added bymistermumbles's avatarmistermumbles

Seeing as GOG is branching out into the newerish game territory, I think it would be great if they tried to open a discussion with Runic Games to maybe bring Torchlight 2 here for a day-one release.

Would love to see this on GOG, I would buy it in a heartbeat. Hate Steam, wish it wasn't such a popular client, support DRM free on GOG!

Would love to see it here, but too bad it looks like Runic's commitment to DRM-free was hollow in the end.

IIRC, Online Multiplayer only requires a Runic account. No account needed for LAN. I love this game and I hope it gets approved.

Still crossing my fingers for an eventual GOG release. It's been out long enough that a DRM-free version shouldn't be an issue, although I suspect that multiplayer will require some sort of registration.

Komiyan, GOG has already announced they are not exclusively focusing on old games, and have chosen to branch out into newer-ish + indie territory. (That transition began a while ago.) Old games are still being added to the catalog, but it is no longer correct to say GOG is just "for old games."

You can find this on steam. GOG is for OLD games, why are they adding NEW games? It seriously lags the shit out of the dev process as old games must be ported, new ones simply work by default.

I was very disappoted, as TL2 was released, because it has DRM incorporated. If it's released here at GoG.com, I will buy it instantly!

There are other DRM free versions around, so piracy should not be a concern. I hope it comes soon, I wait for the GOG version. If runic does not want to release it here, I will probably just pass.

Runic stated they won't be making a gog version since release due to piracy concern HOWEVER, seeing that 3 months have passed since release and also the first one is already here I guess we can expect TL2 somewhere this new year. I'd be happy to own a DRM free version.

I already own a copy but would purchase it again for a version without the activation limit. Requiring a unique serial is fine for multiplayer but without any way to de-activate/authorize an already activated copy it's easy to reach that 10 install limit - in my case on the *same* machine (through drive upgrades and formats).

LOL, the reason for the lack of a GOG version is piracy? Runic Games won't be getting any of my money then, not now, not ever. Fuck them.

So far, the non Steam version of Torchlight 2 updates automatically thru launcher, most likely only for legit copies. Stand alone patch is not available yet. Which means one more layer of "protection" and not exactly gog ready. But, in a couple of years, Runic might release the final version of Torchlight 2 on gog, eventually. They would be really stupid not to do it.

Voted for future reference, I understand Runic's stance on the piracy issue. But as has already been said the game is already cracked and available. pen_sq is right about the best friend comment. But that doesn't mean the game would be at a complete loss. Here's an example below. Put it this way: 1. Runic puts game on gog > 1 customer buys it and passes it on to his friend = Profit from 1 person. 2. Runic doesn't put it on gog > no customers buy it and both them and their friends pirate it = No Profit at all. Unfortunately there will always be piracy. Honestly I prefer if the game was available on gog.

@Fake_Sketch I had emailed them with both a SS of the game being available to pirate (showing DRM is worthless) and a SS of this when it had about 100 or so less votes on the 21st along with telling them people were waiting until it was DRM-free to purchase it. "Hey thank you for the email. We do appreciate your feedback. All the best" Was their response. I don't think they care.

Okay, Torchlight 2 is about to be released via Steam and other services. I hope gog.com managed to be among them? I don't expect a lower price or anything, but Steam-free is SUCH a great motivator to buy it for me. Plus, I'd probably love the goodies. Whaddaya say, gog.com?

I'd pay a premium price for a non-DRM version, if they'd sell it to me. Something like 10 to 20 dollars, no problem. That would still make it no more expensive than many new games, and it wouldn't ruin their regular price point for customers who wouldn't want to pay as much. Think of it as risk management, Runic. There's always a risk, but then again you get your reward up front. And let's face it, every DRM gets cracked anyway. Which is riskier, taking the free-money, pure-profit premium and making extraordinary profits one transaction at a time, or discounting the fact that people can get your DRM'ed game for free anyway if they really wanted to ... and selling them nothing? Or nothing until years from now when the price has dropped in half and it's too late for one sale to lead to another by word of mouth?

Aww... Saw seattleandrew's comment about his dialog with Runic Game and I'm sad. =( Nowadays I very much prefer getting my games on GOG rather than Steam or any other place. If fact, I've gotten the GOG version of games even if I still have working copies on discs or Steam, just to slowly convert my games library over. Heck, even if GOG sells Torchlight 2 for a slightly higher price, so long it's DRM-free and comes with full goodies, I'd still get it here!

Let's be realistic. A lot of customers are not going to tell their best friend that they have to go buy their own copy, and download the bit-exact installer that you have right here, before joining in on a multiplayer game. Buying a game for full price on day 1 for is an impulsive thing to do, and that same impulsiveness also brings temptation, from sharing bought copies to outright piracy. Every economic equation screams at developers to not go DRM free, and we're not going to change that overnight. GOG started by making the case with ancient games that "some sales are better than nothing". The GOG ideal has moved up the ladder by showing devs that we are a more valuable market than dumping $5 cardboard sleeved disks at Big-Mart. If GOG could show the world that releasing here makes more money than Starforc'ing a 1/4 price GOTY reprint, every publisher would be beating down the door. Maybe a compromise platform could be reached, where DRM is used for the first year or two, but must be removed after that.

I spoke with the guys at Runic Games during PAX about Torchlight 2 coming to GOG.com. Although their answer is understandable, it's still a little disappointing. They basically said that they're too afraid of piracy to release Torchlight 2 on GOG.com immediately. In the future they'll look to releasing it on GOG, but they said that'd be a year to two after the release on steam. Although it's nice to ask GOG about getting torchlight 2, it may be even more helpful if you email Runic Games and let them know how much you want to see a DRM-Free version.
