Far be it from me to defend the current practice, but I see some sense in it.

These are GOG games available for free via a GOG gift code at Amazon Prime.

Of course one needs to have an Amazon Prime account to take advantage of these free GOG games, and I don't.

Anyway, you are a bit late to the party, as this was discussed some time back, and the horse has already bolted.

That other Amazon Prime specific thread deals with all free games, not just any GOG ones. This here is more targeted specifically to GOG.

This is the place to report free GOG games, and report it I shall, and thou dasn't stop me.

Having an Amazon Prime account is not, by definition, "free." Membership is required (with a monetary cost) and it is also a restriction to acquiring games. This thread was either misnamed or has been taken off topic for a considerable amount of time.

YES and NO.

If you signed up for a Prime account, because of video streaming, then anything beyond that can be seen as a bonus, and therefor kind of free. It's a perspective thing. Some may indeed sign up for the bonus games as well, and so cost may factor into it. Each of us will rationalize it how we will. And the cost is the same whether you grab any games or not.

If we wanted to be pedantic, we could have two threads about free GOG games. Me, I think one suffices. It might be different if we got free games at GOG every second day, and so we would be dealing with higher numbers. Anyway, it keeps the thread alive, and more visible for those who might benefit from it not being buried away months at a time.

Even if a user intended to subscribe for the video service, this "bonus" is still a part of that same service since this is a benefit which includes this feature. Conventionally, one has paid for that. So in effect, it counts for all of it, not just exclusively video. If it were exclusively for video, you would not be required to join the subscription (officially or through the free trial) for the games included in it. Let's not move goalposts. It's not exactly free when the main service functions with an exchange for money.

It's for that reason I am personally wary of any mention of Prime or similar schemes. It comes with a catch, plain as day.

It's now my holy mission to post every time Prime gives out free GOG codes, and I'm gonna ping these dudes each time.

In short, it is down to the user whether it is free or not.

Just like if you subscribe to a newspaper for the news, and then unbeknownst to you, you now get a free beer delivered to your door every day. Is that beer free or not? They don't have to give you that bonus, and it doesn't cost you anything ... though you could claim the cost must be buried somewhere in your subscription fee. Or maybe it is a promotional thing, so the cost isn't passed on at all.

So like I said, it is all about how you rationalize it ... each one of us.

It didn't go over my head. This is going over YOUR head. You're puprosely being obtuse, and going on the attack to willfully ignore the point of Prime.

No, they don't "have to". Except this is actually part of the subscription. It's not random. Since it's gone on for so long, it's part of the subscription. Just like you tried to pin Prime for subscribing to movies - they also do free movies! Maybe that fact flew over your head. They don't have to, right? Or would it have been better for you to accept that is actually part of the subscription service? It isn't some third party giving you beer by their own accord for the sake of you being a subscriber. It's covered by your subscription through Prime officially as part of the program.

It's not so much rationalization as it being an actual benefit. It's not something that's simply for the sake of calling it a "Prime deal". It's part of the program. It's not because it was actually free. It's because you've paid for it through the subscription. That's how subscription services work. This isn't a matter of opinion that you can wishcast into whatever you feel like seeing it that way. Since it is clearly advertised this way, it's very clearly by definition not free by the fact they've basically stated that this is the exchange of cash for service.
