Can somebody say for sure whether Steam version of Dark Fall: Lost Souls is completely DRM-free or not?
I found some conflicting information about this.

Anybody know if CEG DRM is involved for the following games on Steam?

Runaway: A Road Adventure
Runaway: The Dream of the Turtle
Runaway: A Twist of Fate

Of course, you will have to do the original download from Steam and all - keep in mind.
I actually have this installed from Steam + just ran this game to check it out.

The game works without Steam running in the background!

Without Steam running, if you go into the game-folder to boot the EXE: the game will boot from the game-folder no problem + will NOT boot force Steam game-client to actually boot.

And the game will also indeed SAVE locally to the hard-drive, while Steam's closed.

It's not on the list and, as far as the thread says, it doesn't work without Steam.

I didn't see it on the list (and didn't find results using search), but super panda adventures can run just fine without steam.
I didn't try to move the game folder, but I did try to run it when the steam client isn't on, and it worked just fine - even though it couldn't run at all through steam offline mode as it was downloaded via Family Sharing... which makes me a pirate? o.O

edit: Also Adventures of Shuggy which is on the list didn't work when I gave it the same treatment...
edit 2: Why are there games like 1000 Amps, Aztaka, Blocks That Matter, Bob Came in Pieces, Containment: The Zombie Puzzler, Cortex Command, Crayon Physics Deluxe, DEFCON, Faerie Solitaire listed with No information whatsoever? I'm actually interested in the latter one.
edit 3: Also I don't get why free games available DRM-Free elsewhere like Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok are included in the list?
If you want them DRM-Free just don't get them on Steam in the first place!
If you do want them on Steam then losing the achievements is ruining the whole point of having them on Steam o.O

I wonder why this game is missing from the DRM-free list then, as the first two games are on that list.

You can't play games from Steam Family Sharing (now: SFS) in offline mode, that would defeat the whole purpose of SFS. It would also be technically difficult if it would be allowed to play SFS games offline. But it's only the Steam client that restricts the access, so playing DRM-free games without the client is still possible.

As for Adventures of Shuggy, I thought it would run on a different PC. Maybe you had to install the latest DirectX from the game folder, I'm not really sure at the moment. If you installed Adventures of Shuggy through SFS, then it could be that it won't work for you. Some games are DRM-free but need the launcher when installed through SFS, at least that was the case for VVVVVV on Windows for me.

The games without information on the list were mentioned somewhere to be DRM-free, but nobody specified on which OS they are DRM-free as there are differences. I would simply assume that they will work under Windows as most people who don't specify their OS won't use Mac or Linux, but without sources I won't add them as DRM-free under Windows.

This list simply lists games on Steam without DRM. Why does it matter if it is available DRM-free outside of Steam or not? I think that Steam is convenient with its updates and Sales but I don't like the DRM-aspect, so I launch Steam once in a while to conveniently update and download games and then play the DRM-free ones without the client. That will probably change when GOG finally launches the Galaxy client, but let's see if it will be any good or as crappy as the Desura client.

There is not as single DRM free game on Steam. The title of this thread is very misleading.

This thread is about finding games that don't use the Custom Executable Generation component, which is certainly DRM.

But not the only DRM. The need to use the Steam client to begin with, that all games from Steam need authentication and authorization from the mothership for your account before they are installed, means they have DRM.

The "FAQ" is wrong on its first point: Steam *is* DRM.

The "FAQ" is also wrong in its second point. If a game does not run when its folder is moved, it may well be because of broken dependencies or paths.

The third point is irrelevant.

You are right, because once you have installed a game from Steam and you copy the game files , they are already in the installed configuration, not as an installer, so installing them would be impossible, but playing is possible.


For instance, almost all DosBox games are exactly the same as they are on GOG, so there are plenty of DRM-free games on Steam.

As much as I dislike Steam, I think we should be honest about Steam.
There are many games that don't have DRM, and don't "call home" to Steam. The only form of DRM in those games is the Steam client in itself, and with otherwise DRM-free games, it can be considered as a download application, and nothing more.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is DRM Free just Transfer the game to my laptop & it works. I don't know if this will change in time. Enjoy it because i have a feeling it won't last.

Do not confuse installation with execution. You can have DRM'd installation for DRM-Free execution, as well as DRM-Free installation for DRM'd execution, or any other combination.

Carmageddon 1 and 2 on steam provide the exact same files the GOG installer does, down to the byte (a few differences in text files). So either Carmageddon 1 and 2 are DRM-Free on Steam, or they are DRM'd on GOG.

As I've mentioned before, the process to play a GOG game is the following:
1) Authenticate with GOG and download the installer.
2) Install the installer to computer you want to play on.
3) Play.

The process for a DRM-Free game on Steam is the following:
1) Authenticate with Steam and download the game files
2) Optional Move the game files to computer you want to play on.
3) Play.

Some people require an offline installer to consider a game DRM-Free, other people don't. But the offline installer is for DRM-Free installation, not DRM-Free execution.
