I've heard rumours that the FF VII remake will try to incorporate more action based gameplay to make it more "appealing" to modern gamers. Pretty much every major RPG being an ARPG and nearly every major strategy being a RTS these days, is turn based dead in AAA gaming?

As much as I love turn based gameplay, it's often considered to be niche/slow/boring/old fashioned and out of date among other negative descriptions these days, which is disappointing. Will turn based games ever get the big budget treatments like they used to?

Ahem, XCOM.
low rated
It depends how it is done. if it is those tacky JRPG's then yes, it is over done, boring and too old fashioned.

However a strategy game like X-Com benefits from it greatly.

Civ 5, Endless Legend, Galactic Civilizations III, the master of orion reboot being developed atm, xcom, shadowrun returns/dragonfall, wasteland 2 would like a word with you.

JMich: Ahem, XCOM.
That is an Exception.

Not a standard or at least a pleortha games with that gameplay that is healthy along side real time action.

But back on topic I too have been questioning this Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Like I said before is it gonna be faithful remake? Even if it does have real time action? How is the overworld gonna work? How are the gonna do the Sephiroth boss fight?

Yeah just look at how watered down they had to make it!

See Faenrir's post above your own. Biggest exception for XCOM is that it is a multiplatform game (PC, Console, Mobile) while still a AAA TBS one.

Between X-Com, Xenonauts and XCOM, I enjoyed the latter one the most. Waiting for the next one to be released.

Personally I feel certain games r just not meant 2 be played as RTS due 2 their complexity & heavy need 4 micro-management. Can u imagine if the Civilisations, SimCity or ROTK series were 2 become RTS & played as 1? I certainty can't & even if they 1 day really could I wun dare 2 play it cos just the thought of making so many moves in so little time horrifies me. The AI would probably overwhelm me b4 I could even build a city 1st, lol.

This is just my opinion of cos, does not mean wat I can't do others can't also. :)

Um... SimCity is real time?
Add Divinity: Original Sin to the list. In fact, it went the opposite direction. The franchise was action RPG and then switched over to turn based in the last release.

I was actually going to put Firaxis as the exception in the OP, but it was worded awkwardly, so I left it out and Xcom 2 seems to not be treated as highly, which makes AAA TB games' future uncertain.

With the exception of maybe, Xcom or Civ 5, it's questionable whether you'd consider them AAA.

No, it's mid range.

Yes, compared to the standard AAA budget, it is actually an "indie" budget.
That the result has been games *better* than the AAA published at the same time doesn’t change this fact ;)
