dtgreene: "RPG", in its common use, has become diluted to the point of becoming useless. It is for this reason that I prefer a very strict definition of what an RPG is. In particular, I require, for a game to be an RPG, that the outcome of a character's action must be based on the character's skill, *not* the player's skill.
I agree. And in return the outcome of a character's action in an action game should be based on player skill, not on the character's skill. But in reality it is often a mix of both. Because genres are not discrete categories but rather a continuum.

dtgreene: So, you require that a game has to be sufficiently big to be an RPG; I have a feeling this definition might disqualify games like Alakabeth and the remakes of this first Dragon Quest. Are you sure that's what you want?
Sorry, forgot the irony tags.
Amusing coincidence. Straight from Stuff's project topic, page 21 of the Albion manual. See attached screenshot. Fair and simple definition.
