Cause there's no business like show-business!

Our DRM-Free approach to digital distribution has been the foundation of GOG.com since day one and we're convinced it is now firmly rooted in the gaming industry landscape. More and more users start to expect and demand the digital content they paid for to be free from any kind of restrictive mechanisms that limit access to their collections and get in the way of enjoyment. We think this is a good time to take the next step in our quest to make digital entertainment better for everyone. Today we set out to spread our DRM-Free ideas across the movie industry! That's right: GOG.com now offers DRM-Free movies.

Our goal is to offer you cinema classics as well as some all-time favorite TV series with no DRM whatsoever, for you to download and keep on your hard drive or stream online whenever you feel like it. We talked to most of the big players in the movie industry and we often got a similar answer: "We love your ideas, but … we do not want to be the first ones. We will gladly follow, but until somebody else does it first, we do not want to take the risk". DRM-Free distribution is not a concept their lawyers would accept without hesitation. We kind of felt that would be the case and that it's gonna take patience and time to do it, to do it, to do it right. That's quite a journey ahead of us, but every gamer knows very well that great adventures start with one small step. So why not start with something that feels very familiar? We offer you a number of gaming and internet culture documentaries - all of them DRM-Free, very reasonably priced, and presenting some fascinating insight into topics close to a gamer's heart. Now, what do we have in store for you?

- There's a whole new Movie Catalog for you to browse!
- All the movies we sell are priced at $5.99 (that's a launch promo price for a few of them), and we aim to have that as the main price point for most of our future releases
- Two of the movies - The Art of Playing and TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard are available for FREE, so that you can test our new movie distribution features
- Most of our movies are in Full HD 1080p quality, some in 720p. With those of you with limited bandwidth or download quota in mind, we also supply much lighter 576p versions.
- Apart from downloading your movies you have the option to watch them streaming online, right here on GOG.com
- GOG.com is famous for its bonus goodies - each movie will come with as many of them as we can muster
- You can expect subsequent movie releases each week

That's it. GOG.com Movies is a go, time to get some popcorn!
Aaand gog takes another step away from its roots.

Sabin_Stargem: Would it be possible for folks like Linkara or the Angry Video Game Nerd to distribute their content through GOG?

JudasIscariot: That depends on them, I guess. I really don't have the details as far as movie acquisition is concerned :)
I recommend looking into the AVGN in particular, as he also has a commercial videogame on Steam, and an upcoming movie based on his character. GOG can do a cross-promotion between the game and movie.

Barry_Woodward: GOG try getting Joss Whedon's Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. It's creator owned, so no need to deal with a big studio and getting Joss Whedon on board would definitely attract people to the movie section. Also, The Guild by Felicia Day is a great webseries that I think gamers here would appreciate.
What the above person said, and also there are some comedians in the US that already sell their performances DRM free on their websites. For fairly cheaply even, usually only about $5 US. Louis CK is probably the most popular one that I know of but Jim Gaffigan and Aziz Ansari also sell DRM free performances through their websites.

Maybe GOG could aim to partner with them and be another distributor for their stuff. I could see it being a way for the comedians to reach a different and more international audience. If GOG could could pull that off and arrange to distribute the Joss Whedon and Felicia Day shows mentioned above too maybe some more doors would start to open for them and they'd be able to get other things.

I like the idea of GOG being able to offer older films and more "niche" films from around the world some day. Plus if they could get cartoons and anime that would be awesome. At least in Canada 99.99 percent of movie rental shops have closed down, and Netflix is pretty limited in comparison to the US. On top of that our Netflix seems to periodically lose certain movies and shows. Twice now I've been in the middle of a series and Netflix just takes in down. At least with GOG if they take down something you can download it and keep a copy.

No porn? I shall pass.
I think the lowest-hanging fruit for movies would be approaching individuals and offering to distribute their works - not corporations. Frankly, corporations have their products shackled, and it is only with a hefty warchest or momentum that they can be swayed to give up the key. Start small, and grow like a Katamari into something big enough to challenge the gods.

Hahahaha mate you made laugh very loud!
Two things:
1. There is no proper drm-free video shop on the internet
2. http colon slash slash theoatmeal.com slash comics slash game_of_thrones

Edit: Why can't I post any links at this moment?

You seem to be a new user. It might be a protection against spam. Write a bit more and it'll eventually work.

I never understand why people complain about options. The Movie section is optional. The Modern Indie Games are optional. Everything is optional.

Someone mentioned if anyone wants to open up a store for retro games. Why? GOG sells retro games.

If you're not interested in buying DRM-free movies, Indie movies, etc, then don't visit the Movies' section. Just like when I'm browsing Futureshop and Bestbuy web stores, I visit the audio equipment section and ignore everything else. Why would having other sections deter me from visiting the website for audio equipment? Those other sections don't affect me whatsoever.

Just like GOG offers modern indie games and movies. If you're only interested in retro games, then browse the big list of retro games. How does never clicking into the Movie section affect you browsing for retro games?

Since GOG stands for "Great Old Games", the only compromise I see that's even worthy of mention is creating a separate website for the movies. I can see see why they combined the services. It's probably because GOG receives a lot of attention. So it would make sense to merge them for that one reason. Otherwise, separation is better in my opinion.
I'm a little confused. Is GOG planning to stick to small game-related movies, or should we expect to see big-budget Hollywood movies on here? I'm all for cheap, DRM-free movies, but I'm not sure this was a good selection of movies to start with as it doesn't get me excited.

I don't see how GOG can compete in this space. They got their foothold in games space since they focused on classic games, which at the time no one else was selling. But you can buy classic movies anywhere. If GOG had a catalog the size of Amazon or Netflix, I would be incredibly excited and stop buying digital movies anywhere else, but I don't see them getting to that level anytime soon.
Nice! I quite enjoy watching video game based movies and documentaries and such, so this is a welcome addition for me. Keep being awesome, GOG!
Not really interested in any of those movies (and I see few movies anyway as most of what comes out of Hollywood is utter crap), but there are two free ones, so you can at least grab those ;)
