Don't forget about Unreal! Depending on the day of the week I might even be tempted to say that the first Unreal was was better than Half-life.

couple that with the long development and the long vengeful memory of fans who didnt like the ads and daikatana was a disaster waiting to happen

Pretty much this. I tried it, and even if I see its flaws (read shit first level and stupid AI), I found to be quite enjoyable actually. And I find the setting pretty cool. It's not a masterpiece, but it should be played by any FPS lover.

FPS
Brütal Doom, in the strange case you don't already know it.
Outlaws: great. Simply that.
Call of Juarez Gunslieger: Gladly surprise by this. No Uplay, interesting narrative, awesome art and satisfying gunplay.
Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon: 80's were awesome.

Metroidvania
Terraria: it's a great metroidvania, with a "little" crafting and sandbox aspect to it, but it is a metroidvania at heart.
Dust: great art and funny gameplay.
VALDIS STORY: ABYSSAL CITY :Simple yet entertaining. Highly recommend it.
Unepic: just in case you don't know it.

Point 'n Click
Blackwell series, again, if you don't know it. Great games, with a fantastic storyline, even if short and, specially the fisrt one, technically poor.
Dracula: you must know these already, just in case.

Sidescrollers
Volgar the Viking: Best game design ever. Period.
Shank, Mark of the Ninja: Pretty well known, but so good they need to be mentioned.
Rogue Legacy: Awesome roguelite with a pretty original premise.
They Bleed Pixels: I cannot recommend this enough. It is great in all aspects: art, music, design and gameplay.

Other
Xenonautss, if you like XCOM
Dungeons of Dredmor: Awesome true Roguelike.
Gunpoint: Stupidly clever and fun.
Uplink: 90's movies hacking ftw.
Hotline Miami: You probably already have these, but play them again.


And pretty much a lot more, you get the idea. Feel free to ask about a particular genre. If lucky, I might know someone not that famous as like those I mentioned.
Also this. I mean, I loved the first one. But this series is the most overhyped and overrated ever.

Brutal Doom is cool and all, but the fanbase is terrible. On par with MLP.
FC3 BD is awesome as all hell. I have it already. And the soundtrack. And a wall poster!
