When you build upon a star...

Starbound, a sandbox action/RPG about settling down on a proceduraly generated universe and exploring its infinite randomness, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows, Mac and Linux with a 33% launch discount.

You are a lonely alien, cast away on an unknown planet after your ship and your spacefaring dreams got severely damaged. Now you must start anew, build yourself a home, blast any rude natives to smithereens, and perhaps gradually establish your own colony. Once you repair your trusty spaceship, a vast galaxy of opportunities will open up and your procedurally generated appetite for adventure and exploration will never let up!

Much like the crafty alien protagonist, developers Chucklefish are building and expanding Starbound one feature at a time, shaping it up with the help of their community. The final version is expected to include a proper plot and quests, as well as an array of additional dungeons, bosses, lore, and loot. Which should make the online drop in/drop out co-op all the more cooler, and give the modders some extra toys to play around with in this near-infinite universe.

Build yourself a home on an expansive, procedurally generated universe and make the most out of being Starbound, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 33% discount will last until February 2, 1:59 PM GMT.

Note: This game is currently in development. See the FAQ to learn more about games in development, and check out the forums to find more information and to stay in touch with the community.

Want to see the game in development live? Retrograde Tom will be showing it off at Twitch.tv/GOGcom tonight, that is January 28th, at 5pm GMT / 6pm CET / 12pm EST. Tune in!
If it where not for the big "Its still Beta" messages written all over it I would assume it is an already finished game. So far I had no errors (besides one elevator which missplaced itself by 1 tile after revisiting my first base) and never felt like a beta tester (but since I get not payed I don't consider myself as one).

Niggles: Are they actually giving backers an option whether to have a gog key?
avatar
sunshinecorp: I've emailed about them the day it got released and got no reply. I'm a long-time backer, by the way. But from what I can gather from what they're saying on their forum, probably not. Backers will probably be stuck with the Humble DRM-free version, whenever THAT gets released.
I got a reply today, they won't give out GOG keys. Already paid $15 for it, don't see me buying on here any time soon.

Edit: Scratch that, I did get a reply. They added a stand alone installer to the Humble key page yesterday.

I'm downloading the Linux DRM-free build from Humble right now. ^_^ (Windows and Mac versions also available, of course)

How is this game doing so far on gog? Is this thing receiving updates properly?

No updates so far. Understandable, since developers didn't release another stable yet, and GOG isn't equipped to handle nightly builds.

How do you feel about completely worthless features being added to this game?

Excuse me? What do you mean by this? The only thing I can think about is the time they are taking before going out of EA, am I right? If so, honestly that doesn't concern me that much. If anything, I don't like Chucklefish's behaviour towards customers and potential ones (I still have yet to see are reply to my mail which I sent on 02 February, in which I asked for nightly builds support on GOG, which turnet to be not ).

I mean they're adding more useless gimmicks to this already bloated development, such as gimmick platforms. :V You'll be waiting.

Sigh, and they said for the umpteenth time that they would make 2-3 updates before 1.0 rolls out? Greeeeeat.
