Themken: Laptops tend to overheat while gaming. First they slow down and eventually emergency shutdown. The operating systems should have a built in setting where you could optionally limit the f/s but as far as I know no OS has that which leads to use of (forced) Vsync :-(
There are a few things one can do to prevent overheating:
1. Undervolting and/or underclocking with a program like
ThrottleStop, but this is not for everybody.
2. Change or make a new Power plan in your Power Options. Under
Processor power management set a lower value for
Maximum processor state. For example, on Intel CPUs setting this to 99% will disable the Turbo boost. I have a profile that limits the CPU clock to 1.9 Ghz - this is for everyday use, like browsing, watching videos, playing older games. Use this in conjunction with a program that monitors temps and clocks, like
Core Temp.
3. Limit the framerate for games with something else other than Vsync. For Nvidia cards you can do this with NVIDIA Profile Inspector from the NVIDIA Inspector program. I presume that similar tools exist for AMD cards too and I think you can actually do this in the driver's settings.
Or use other programs, like
Rivatuner Statistics Server (RTSS), which is also bundled with MSI Afterburner.
4. Last but not least, use a good laptop stand, something with 120mm fan(s) or bigger.
