Feel free to rest your case, but I still find the "steam key redemption without steam" funny. :)

itchy01ca01: Ill agree that both sides have the stupids that show up, but the steam haters used to have coherent arguments.
Now it's just "DRM BADDD FOR YOU AND KILLS YOUR MOTHER" or "STEAM BAD FOR YOU ON MY PROSUPERUPPPED LINUX BROFIST MACHINE YO!"
avatar
Matruchus: LoL that is good :) But its also the only place where you can play Medieval 2: Total War, Empire: Total War, Company of Heroes, Dead Island, CK2, Europa Universalis 4, Civilization V, Alien Isolation, Dying Light and such games on Linux without any hassle.

And yes, you can hate Steam but its also the only venue where you can get AAA games for Linux. Gog unfortunately fails totally on that ground. I might hate the Steam client but I'm also a realist when there is no other option available.
Why do you hate Steam
I have used it for years now and had zero issues

ps Have had no issues with GOG either

You've created the Steam account to buy Braid and then redeem it on GOG?

Fixed.

RadonGOG: ...but also bad by execution.
So, as you might have guessed reading this headline on this day I´ve just created a Steam-Account to redeem a game (Braid) to get it over here for no cost. (and can it buy for some friend of mine instead of for myself)
Well, created that account, tons of captching, changed the profile settings to the ones GOG Connect needs and wanted to redeem the code afterwards. Well, I wanted to redeem the code then...
...looking around...
...continue to look around...
...searching the web...
...watching a youtube-vid...
...and WTF, it appears you can only do this via client.

Well, and this were the moment I started rethinking the process: Why should I redeem that code if I can also gift it to a friend and buy Braid for me? Well, I guess that account will never ever have a game on it then....
Someone is really really behind on things.
On A Lighter note at least we can play against steam players in MP LEL that has to be good, Yeah!

That clarifies things.

I´ve edited the OP in that way. Sorry for failing at post phrasing.

qwixter: I know I was laughing in the other thread when he was incredulous over needing steam to redeem a steam cd key.
avatar
muntdefems: Yeah, what a ridiculous and completely stupid idea! Expecting to be able to redeem a Steam CD Key on the Steam website...

[/sarcasm]

Now, a genuine question: what kind of functionality (if any) does the Steam website provide?
Exactly this was what I´m thinking. But instead of doing your simple step (sorry for not phrasing it out, it looks like it was too simple to get to that point for many others) others started complex theories about were I was in the last years and so on.

CARRiON.FLOWERS: Cool story bro.

I didn´t do a posting like the one you are presenting. And I don´t know yet that I´ve got a clone profile...

You can buy Steam games from tons of other websites as well, but you can't redeem them on those sites...

Just as much as the "steam game purchase without steam", I expect. Otherwise you (and most of the early repliers) were just bashing on the OP for no good reason.

What? Are you telling me that when you buy a Steam-only game on Humble or GG, it gets automatically added to your Steam account? Or perhaps that when you buy a game on the Steam website you then need to activate it with the client?

It's all about the client.

Not at all. The steam game purchase is web based and embedded within the client. Of course they are going to have a web site to make money via selling games. Pretty much everything under the client's Games menu is not on the website or it is well hidden. It was with good reason that we all "bashed" yet another moron that wouldn't even install steam to redeem a key for whatever irrational fear, then posted yet another moronic thread all about it.

Right, whatever you say. I'll leave you with your crusade against the anti-Steam morons.
steam's got the site for the simple reason that Steam is not on every computer and maybe you don't want to miss a sale.

once a game is bought for the Steam service, it is not unreasonable to assume you are going to use the Steam service which is based around the Steam client.

website > purchase > client is not unreasonable.

Again, I don't like DRM. In fact, I'm pretty against DRM. I haven't played Doom.

I WAN PLAY DOOOOO

sorry.

anyway. But, as DRM guys go, Gaben and co aren't so bad.

I doubt you will play it anytime soon since it uses Denuvo. Hopefully after a few years later it will come to gog without this non sense.
