HunchBluntley: I take it that that's a fairly common mechanic among modern "DIablo II-clone" ARPGs?
avatar
idbeholdME: It's not "fairly common". It's the default. An ARPG not behaving like that is an exception.

Off the top of my head, only Diablo 1, Van Helsing and Space Hack let the enemies stay dead after you save and quit. And in Van Helsing, it's an option you have to enable.

In Sacred 1, you can save (and load) anywhere, but enemies still respawn. Not in your immediate vicinity, but once you go far enough from a cleared area.
The "enemies respawning" part isn't what I took exception to -- it's how it was done in Grim Dawn (and, given the utter lack of remark I've seen about it in any discussions about the game, presumably also in games like Titan Quest). There are specific monster encounters -- groups that pop out of the ground in specific configurations, or bosses/mini-bosses. I have no problem with that. But rather than there just being random spawns of area-appropriate enemies occurring after you've cleared the original encounters, it just respawns those same encounters, in those same configurations. And rather than respawns being time-based (or inverse-proximity-based, like you mentioned with Sacred) it's just lazily tied to the (shitty) save/load system. That named boss with a bit of backstory, that you just killed before finishing your last play session? Well, whether that session lasted for five hours or five minutes, the next time you load that game, he'll be back again instantly, along with all the other encounters (and restocked loot containers), with no explanation, because fuck you. Bring us your senses of immersion and progression, we're all out of toilet paper.

I guess I've just gotten lucky in the ARPGs I have played. I got back into PC gaming "only" 8 years ago, and I do not play DRMed or online anything, so I "missed" a lot (from the sound of it, little that would've been worthwhile to me). I actually did play Sacred (though not a lot), as well as Din's Curse (a lot) and the first Torchlight. (Also Divine Divinity and the Zombasite demo, which I don't really count for different reasons.) Torchlight and Din's Curse both do the "autosave on exit, and maybe some other times, but we won't tell you when" thing, but neither ties enemy respawns to the save-load system in any noticeable way, and I think both also save the player's location upon loading (Din's Curse certainly did), rather than resetting you back to town. Even the old Snowblind-engine ARPGs I played back in the PS2 era didn't pull cheap, lazy bullshit like Grim Dawn and its ilk do, for all that PC gamers sneered at those console titles back then.

EDIT: Just because a design feature becomes common enough that people get used to it, doesn't mean it's good. I'd be willing to bet that shit like the things I complained about is a large part of the reason the ARPG subgenre is a ghetto these days. Only people who were already used to the shitty parts (from playing MMOs, perhaps?) and can look past them can get into it.

I already have more games than I have time to play, so sales have kind of lost their appeal to me. A couple of years back, I could have bought even some iffier games from sales, but now, I already know I would never really play them, so why bother purchasing a bigger backlog "just because".

Oh yeah, farming bosses is a big part of these games. The culprit of a lot of games being like this is definitely Diablo 2. Most of the multiplayer activity in the game was either Mephisto runs or Baal runs. Over and over and over again. Grim Dawn pushes this to the extreme where tons of the regular enemies/bosses/mini-bosses have a drop specific only to them, so if you want that item, you have to kill them over and over and over again.

But that usually starts only in the late game. I still play through 99% of these games as I would any other. E.g., explore the map completely, clear out all areas exactly once, all the way up to the highest difficulty. Once I finish the game on the hardest difficulty, I consider the game as finished with that character. If I particularly enjoyed it, I might do some boss/gear grinding after finishing it or I will move on to a new character/build.

Ice_Mage: This is the first time I've seen one.
I was wondering what has been on offer so far?
I've grabbed at least two, maybe three.

So perhaps in your first post, you can list, in a quote at the bottom of the post, what games have been Insomnia ones so far. No doubt other members here can fill in any gaps. :)

The following basic list is a bare bones one, with detail specific to me. If you want the full detail (links, price & discount percentage etc, go to the following.

I've added a link to helpo1's latest post at the top of this thread, since I don't want to just copy his work.
Excellent. Thanks for that.

Fair enough, and they have prices and all.

I will now populate the list I did, but not add the extra detail, just indicate what I grabbed or already owned or missed getting/seeing.

I ignored the Insomnia sale until today when I stumbled across the Second Sight offer by chance and thought "at this price, why not". (Even though that made my purchase of the PS2 version on Ebay pointless, back then after the game was removed from GOG. But to be honest with myself, if I haven't even felt like switching on the old PS2 and trying the game at least once in all those years, I probably wouldn't have in the future either. Chances are much better with the PC version.)

After that, I checked the list of previous offers and realized that I hadn't missed out on anything.

So I guess it's working out well enough for me. ;)

I purchased American Conquest during the Insomnia Sale, but that was all.

I thought about The Van Helsing Chronicles and Two Wolrds II, but didn't ultimately buy them. Van Helsing has always interested me but the gameplay makes my mouse-hand throb with potential carpal tunnel. Two Worlds II I've played multiple times on other platforms... and I'm trying to get away from owning games on multiple platforms and storefronts.

Overall -- for my tastes -- the Insomnia Sale has been kinda *meh.* It started off with some strong games and ok prices... and then just kinda trailed off. Still, I keep checking back. ;)

Hope that happens for you.

It's on sale right now on that other store who's Summer sale just started today. There are sales for the base game, base game + DLC bundle, and just the DLC.

That one starts with S? I will not buy there anymore. I'll settle for what gog offers, but thanks for letting me know.

Yes. Fair enough -- You do what you got to do.

I'm now getting the impression GOG may be showing different games for different time zones.

I never saw Webbed, but I did see System Shock 2, and now it is showing Two Worlds: Epic Edition

That said, when I last looked at the following thread and post, a few hours ago it hadn't been updated for many hours. Now it is saying it was edited 11 hours ago. So maybe there is some refresh display issue going on with GOG.

EDIT
Just discovered that help01 has duplicated his listing post, so it's a bit confusing.

https://www.gog.com/forum/general/keep_your_eyes_wide_open_and_get_the_best_deals_during_our_insomnia_promo_a77de/post554

Never mind me, maybe I somehow missed Webbed, even though I was sure I came back to GOG soon enough to see what was the next game. Or maybe some sell out sooner and so less than 6 hours elapses.

matterbandit: In the end, that one game I purchased I did so by challenging myself to step out of my comfort zone as far as game genres go:
Opus Magnum! I watched the gameplay trailer and found it very hypnotic. :) And I found it's steampunk aesthetic appealing too. Hope I purchased a fun game.

ciemnogrodzianin: Yes, you did! :)
