Memes are cartoons so they can have political affiliations but that is entirely dependent on the creator of a particular piece / cartoon strip. Even then, just because Trump's son tweeted out an old meme doesn't mean Pepe is a white nationalist symbol.

Besides, it avoids the real question of why and how they thought this up and how it got as far as it did in the media. One more go home gamer girl who is this 4chan moments.
