according to a certain cynical brit they have

but is he right or talking out of his teakettle ?

and here is the video he mentioned in the video about military fps games

I think the "realism" in FPS games have caused them to move too slowly. I'm so used to the fast-paced action of games like Doom, Quake, Serious Sam, and Unreal Tournament. Plus there is waaaay too much emphasis on multiplayer nowadays, and there is almost never a decent singleplayer campaign. With modern FPS games, the main character usually can only hold like 2-3 weapons at once, when games like Doom and Unreal had around 10 or more to use. It's just more fun that way!
Heavy use of scripting for cinematic-like experiences has mostly destroyed the arcade FPS subgenre. :(
I agree, they've almost sucked the life right out of it. The last great shooter in my opinion was the first two bioshock.

and its too scripted too many set pieces
you cant go left because the game and the "story"demand you got right to set off a impressive hollywood style setpiece wich looks "kewl" but isnt exactly what i play games for

the second video is a excellent showcase of that
i want to run forward under a hail fo bulelts enter the building and knife the snipers or shoto them in the face with a chaingun
i should be able to do that
but nupe stray too far insta death

i thought video games were about being able to choose how you do things nto being straight jacketed in to a rigid linear path

just compare them with something like goldeneye which has freedom up the wazoo and allows you to tackle the levels anyway you want

and dont get me started on that multiplayer bollocks sigle player modes are just tacked on to justify the price tag
It's about the generation, back then we loved the hero who can beat them all kind of games, up to WWII war games like Medal of Honor Allied Assault, but then more and more you have to appeal to realism as time goes by, since that is what this generation wants. That's just how it is, people wants changed, whether for right or wrong.

but "realims"isnt fun
if i want realism i can go outside and whats so "realistic"about regenerating health or scripted events where the game will kill you if you stray off the linear path ?

i see no realims there just scrips

You have the insta death stuff in Elder Scrolls Online and LOTRO as well. I just wanted to swim to the island you know, but the current kills you in LOTRO or the slaughter fish in ESO. Stuff like that just saps the fun out of things, especially when you want to be able to explore EVERYTHING. Right now I am playing Mass Effect 3 and there are times in there where you see just what you are talking about, just not as much.

Doom was my first shooter and loved the heck out of it, wasn't very good most of the time, but I could build some hellacious levels for the thing. Made some money and got a couple of awards for those.

Exactly! The constant "scripted events" in modern FPS games really ruins the experience. The levels in the original Doom were always vast and you could visit almost anywhere. In Quake, with all 3-dimensions, you could even rocket-jump to places you weren't supposed to go!

They have indeed.

Most of today's FPS are:

- Scripted.
- Console Oriented (watered down).
- Based on Military and Zombies (or both).
- Generic level design aka a snorefest.

They've been so focused on these things that they forgot what made FPS so popular in the first place - the fast paced gameplay.

I haven't played a modern FPS game in many years, in fact I still play and prefer the old ones such as the Build engine games, Unreal series and the id software catalog.
A bit old, but this image still fits imo.

FPS map design

There are a few modern ones that try to break from the mold, but for the most part they feel like hallway shooters with crappy CGI movies spliced in.
There's nothing wrong with a scripted and linear FPS. Bioshock infinite was brilliant, it was just about linear (apart from a few cosmetic decisions you could make) and it needed to be in order to convey the plot.

Scripted FPS is a separate genre, and one that has its place. There may be demand for more traditional "maze" driven FPS games, in which case there will be people that fill that demand.
Eh, I dunno if they've gone backwards as such. As some have said, nothing wrong with a game based on linear story and set-pieces, although for my money if they're going to do that, I at least like them to try and disguise the fact. Half Life 1 + 2, the original Halo and Republic Commando are all examples of fairly linear FPSs that I truly loved.
It's not that they've gone backwards, just that they've lost variety. Was a time when we could have arcade style, fast paced FPSs and linear, story-driven FPSs, now it's nearly always the latter. It's a shame - more choice is always good.
FPS games as I knew them in the 90's honestly died as soon as FPS games started really working on consoles. They changed fundamentally then, and haven't changed back. While RPGs arguably did a similar thing we now have true PC RPGs again from indies, but no true FPS games. I still feel like FEAR and Crysis are the last PC focused RPGs without a lot of toned-down bullshit in them.

That said, I can still enjoy a nice, open world shooter/RPG style hybrid. I enjoyed Far Cry 3 for example, and the Bioshock games. I can't play straight-up FPS games anymore though, I find them insanely boring.

Ganni1987: - Console Oriented (watered down).
lets not go there
goldeneye was a n64 only game and it still played aces with hueg levels you coudl tackle in any way possible
either sneakily or rambo your way through

bollocks i dont buy that
i already cited goldeneye
and the ports of doom and quake are depending on the platform decent as well
powerslave is another good game
and halo is not bad either

the platform a game is released on ha snothing to do with the quality of the game
