Half-Life series were interesting shooters with environmental puzzles and great sound design (like the sounds of opening doors, pushing buttons, climbing ladders) and good atmosphere, that's about it. In the same genre (kinda) games like Ultima Underworld or System Shock are way superior.
The ppl who think HL2 was so amazing that they've literally become cultists for HL3 and valve are just bizarre. HL3 could release tomorrow and I'd still probably wait for a 30% off sale.
It's obvious Valve have moved on from single-player games (or games in general?) because of Steam's ridiculous profits, it's more profitable to make multiplayer games like DOTA2 where you only have to make a map or two and that's it and sell cosmetic DLC on the side, as opposed to a singleplayer campaign with dozens of maps etc.
