Darvond: Are you open to the idea of removing the biggest source of bloat and going with a system that hypothetically could have a desktop so light that it would only use 30~ MB?

"The process wmaker (with pid 1146) is using approximately 28.1 MB of memory.
It is using 25.9 MB privately, and a further 16.8 MB that is, or could be, shared with other programs.
Dividing up the shared memory between all the processes sharing that memory we get a reduced shared memory usage of 2.2 MB. Adding that to the private usage, we get the above mentioned total memory footprint of 28.1 MB."
Why bother with the desktop? Just get rid of that, and use a window manager.

For that matter, if all you're going to do is game, get rid of the window manager, and just run xorg with just an xterm. You can then start the game or a suitable launcher from the command line.

(I could go further and remove xorg entirely, but then we run into the problem of not being able to run most games, as they require some GUI system to be running. (Can Sanctuary RPG be run in this environment?))

Dogmaus: Very good Fabled Lands gamebook, text based adventure, requires Java but other than that a toaster could run it and provides a lot of fun and it's even free. Save your money for a new laptop :)

Thanks for that. Been wondering when Fabled Lands would go digital.

It's unofficial, fan made but approved and works well, and comprises the first six volumes with all illustrations. If you have the books there is an app in the Google store that keeps the stats for you but I prefer all digital gamebooks now. It was complicated to keep track of everything compared to more linear gamebooks, as it is the ancestor of openworld games.
I'm glad that you like Fabled Lands.

Sybeiria: Thanks for all the recommedations.

Well a lot of games that I played when I was young. But never played NWN 1 or 2. Maybe gonna try that out, But idk which one to try first haha.

Well I have a mouse. And a lot of modern games worked for me (Bioshock Series, LoL, Skyrim, CK2..)
NWN1 is, in most people's opinion, far far far better.

The online persistent worlds and campaigns are fantastic. There are thousands of hours of great modules.

If you are cash-strapped, it's great to wait for a sale.

While you wait, there are many free games you can play, too.

Heroes of the Storm should work fine. That's my current addiction.

If you grab Spiderweb games, they're usually good and long too. Light on graphics and heavy on story. But nwn is far better. :)

If you look through high rated RPGs, you'll find many.

Temple of Elemental Evil, Baldurs Gates and Icewind Dales, sliver, Krondors, and many more are all great. You should be able to pull off Witcher 1 with no problems.

The main thing is, save your money for a sale if a game you want. Wishlist what you want and find something fun to do in the meantime. And only but what you'll play. Those budget rules will keep you going for a long time. If course, nobody follows them, including me. :)

If you're doing online stuff - yeah, NWN1 is where it's at (compared to NWN2).

I liked NWN1 base game's campaign, but wasn't in love with it. Namely, there's two major storylines here. There's the Neverwinter problems and the issues w/ Fenthick, Aribeth and the King (which I thought was great) and the cliche resurrections of an ancient evil (meh, didn't care for this at all; this felt VERY rushed to me).

I certainly preferred the expansions - SoU (that was good) and Hordes of the Underdark (that was great - and also added more control over your party and now you could have 2 tag along with you, making a party of 3 tops).

I still need to get around to playing the Kingmaker DLC package (with other premium mods) found in NWN Diamond and NWN EE); and go buy some of the newer DLC's found in NWN: EE (especially the re-done/remastered ones from Ossian).

NWN2 is more single-player focused, TBH. I really liked NWN2's base game (thought it was much better than NWN1's OC, but preferred NWN1 Horde's campaign); absolutely loved Mask of the Betrayer (it gave me lots of PST feels); and also Zehir was pretty good (I liked the new overland/over-view map, features, trade routes, etc etc).

I still need to get around to Westgate DLC/expansion from NWN2: Complete. I wish someone - like Beamdog - would do a NWN2: EE.

There is a such thing as too much minmaxing.
Yeah, Mask of the Betrayer is by far the best thing of the NWN-series.
The original NWN2 campaign is also excellent, although I quickly patched it so I can have all companions in the party just for all the banter!

NWN1's campaign is kinda bad; I remember being super disappointed with it after being hugely impressed with the Baldur's Gate series, but the strength of NWN1 is deffo in the multiplayer.
The expansions and premium modules are slightly better, and there are some incredibly good and creative user modules, like the sadly unfinished LoneWolf ones (Kai 4 life!) - So good they poached the author to make a premium module and never continued LW!

For some reason NWN2 really sucks for multiplayer; It's very dependent on being able to pause to do things accurately, so trying to play it purely in real-time is incredibly awkward and makes multiplayer quite frustrating.

NWN1 OTOH works a lot better in real-time and I spent many years on NWN persistent worlds like Prisoners of the Mists and the original Nordock (I was so sad when that shut down! Met and got to know some amazing and incredible people there from all over the globe!)
