paladin181: The irony of this quote. I don't know if it was intentional....
All Judeo-Christian religions and Islam have a conversion decree. It is fundamental to their belief that they should try to convert all non-believers, and in extreme circumstances, kill anyone who refuses to convert. Most modern practitioners have left the "kill non-believers" by the wayside, but that doesn't change the fact that they (we, I am a Christian) are taught to spread the beliefs, to impose them on people who are not smart enough or willing to accept the teachings. I'm not saying that this is right, but just giving information to people who may not be aware why someone would push their beliefs onto others, and it is because they believe it is their divine duty to convert the masses.
If you mean the "thank God" part then yes, that was a little joke.
I realize proselytization is a thing, that's why I consider Judaism the only agreeable religion out of the big three. They don't try to convert others and they believe virtuous non-Jews go to Heaven as well. Meanwhile, Christianity's join us or go to Hell doesn't jive with me.
Anyways, I think proselytization directly motivates people to do horrible, horrible things and helps them overcome natural barriers against this behavior like conscience, guilt, moral values, social norms, respect for others, among other things. It's pure and simple radicalization. Especially dangerous with unstable or deranged individuals. And doing it in a sensible manner with genuine good intentions and respect for the other party seems not to fulfill the definition of proselytization, so... yeah.
Important note: it's not just about religion. The idea of proselytization can sour anything. I'm a vegan, and naturally I wish everyone was a vegan, but I don't agree with the methods of certain (typically young and just converted) vegan activists which resemble religious proselytization.
