Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

Destro: System tray is coming in 0.6 and as for translations they are surely coming later as well!
I'm just here to say.. Thanks GOG for that!
GOG.Com,

I really like your products and services. I recommend your site to all of my friends and family all the time. I just got the Alpha for GOG Galaxy and I am impressed; however, there is just one thing that bothers me and it was a problem that was present with your installers as well when they changed versions. That problem is folder naming conventions. Please pick a naming standard and stick to it. That is my only wish. I shouldn't have to sift through all of my game files to find specific settings or saved games to transfer to the new folder that was created with a new version of a program. Is it good practice to uninstall the old version? Yes it is. Do I (want to) do that every time there is a new version that comes out? No, I don't. Secondly, with this shift to a client, I understand it is in alpha and I'm sure that you will fix it, but please add a file verification check or something to ensure that if the program is installed on a system that I don't have to re-download the whole install for an update because the name of the folder was "11th Hour' and not 'The 11th hour (honestly I've had to move my game files a couple of times because it keeps switching.) I will get off of my soap box now. This is the only issue that I have ever had with your service. You are always quick to release patches and updates, you make things right in the world (Especially when it comes to LucasArts games, just get me Shadows of the Empire and Episode 1 Racer and my life will be complete) and are very upfront about your policies. Again, I love your games and products and in some ways I think that you are much better than some of the other gaming services in terms of your products and how you conduct business. Thank you. That is all.

Respectfully and Sincerely,
A Dedicated Fan of GOG
Ive been using the Alpha of Gog Galaxy a little while and for the most part it works. But there one suggestions i like to make. One is i think it would be a little easier to navigate if there was a "Sort By Genre" options. Like you select "Adventure" and it only shows your Adventure games.
When installing/Downloading games (Enough to fill up the queue), The scroll bar isn't always responsive when you click and drag the scroll bar, but the arrows will work or the arrows won't work but the scroll bar will. The mouse wheel works fine though.
The client is running really well for me so far. I'm really excited about this. I just wanted to say nice job so far :). If I find any errors I'll be sure to post them on mantis.

What? So Galaxy neither asks for a custom path for the games, nor sticks to the current folder?
That's absurd O_o

(but maybe just an alpha problem)

Hi ChronicJuiceboxx,

Thanks for all the kind words about GOG :).

As for the issue itself regarding folder naming, could you please post it together with the steps required to reproduce it and your Client logs, into mantis.gog.com?

Generally speaking if you successfully add a game to the Client (meaning that the Client show it together with the game icon in the sidebar and next to the button "MORE" you can see "UP TO DATE"), then the folder this game is present in should never change by itself.

(but maybe just an alpha problem)
The Galaxy client alpha settings screen lets you choose the drive/directory where you want all of your games installed, another for where you want downloaded games to go, and another for extras. These are global settings that apply to all games at once. There is no way to set per-game overrides to that during install as install is a one-click process at the moment.

Whether or not they plan on adding options to install games elsewhere is unknown at this time other than manually going into settings and changing the location for every game. I don't know if that will cause Galaxy to forget where some games were previously installed or not.

There are many different ways this could be handled and be more user friendly and GOG will hopefully implement something in the future. The way it works on Steam is the game installation dir is called your "Steam Library location" or something like that, and it lets you add multiple library locations from within settings dialogue boxes. When you install a game on Steam, it isn't a one-click process but rather a few clicks and one of them is choosing where the game will be installed by choosing from a combo-box drop down of all of the locations you've previously configured Steam library folders in settings. At a bare minimum hopefully GOG implements something like this, as it makes a lot of sense.
I've been trying out Galaxy a bit more heavily the last few days and trying to contribute by filing the odd bug report. I think it's going to be great once it's done but a lot of polishing (and implementation of some basic functionality) is still left to do. Two questions:

1. Galaxy client automatically switches my MacBook Pro to discrete graphics which is a battery concern. Steam client keeps to integrated graphics and is both more functional and one could say also say bloated so I had expected that Galaxy would also stick to integrated graphics. Is this something that might change by final release?

2. I've noticed that when I download anything through the client (installer, manual, soundtrack, whatever) and then click the same item again the client re-downloads the whole file. Is this correct? Shouldn't it check the hash of the local file with the server and see if it is different before re-downloading an unchanged file? Chunking the file would be even better for really large downloads so that even if something minor has changed the download would stay relatively small.

Galaxy Client on Mac uses GPU acceleration for smooth scrolling and increased UI responsiveness as well as to greatly decrease CPU usage - on most Macbooks and iMacs we've checked it decreased CPU usage by 40-60% at very least at a cost of minimal GPU load during scrolling and other actions resulting in redrawing of the UI. And considering current Apple notebooks (Apple removed discrete GPUs from every single product line except the most expensive model of Macbook Pro), if we'd disable GPU acceleration it would actually mean shorter battery life for pretty much all our users (very likely also for you as well :)

Speaking of your system specifically, I'm not sure why OSX activates the discrete graphics instead of integrated one - maybe the integrated does not support certain acceleration features, but on every single Macbook we've tried it worked perfectly fine with integrated card. Does Chrome on it's default settings (without altering flags) also triggers discrete graphics for you?

In case you will have some more observations, I'd recommend posting them to mantis.gog.com so the team can look further into it.

The default flow of the Client is game installation and auto updating, while any downloader-kind of functions are additional flow to it. For that reason, for we don't (yet) track history / status of standalone installers or goodies after the download is complete. Surely in future we'll look more into this, but as of today, when Downloader still works, it's not the top priority of us. Of course, feel free to drop the suggestion to mantis as well.

Makes sense. Mine was the most expensive Retina MBP when I bought it. But that was a couple of years ago now unfortunately. Chrome sticks to integrated graphics even on Youtube and when watching Flash video; I can't get it to kick into discrete graphics mode. Maybe it's some specific graphics call in Galaxy that's doing it. I'll log it on mantis with my system specs for information in case it's useful in the future.

That's fine. Just thought it was a bit strange.
Did the client stop working for others recently? It just sits at the home page, trying to load content but never goes anywhere. I also can't click on anything like my library.

Also, on a personal note, I use a restrictive firewall (TinyWall) where I have to manually allow programs through the firewall. Considering the GOG Galaxy client has .exe files all over the place, this makes it a bit hectic. If only there was a couple executables, and they were located just in the install directory. That would be nice.

Works fine here... what version are you using?

There's a-whole-lotta people having this issue. If you check on mantis, you'll see one I posted as well as another, and some people who've added the problem to my issue notes.
One of the main points of GOG games is that they are DRM free. Will Galaxy be mandatory or will I be able to install and play my GOG games without ever installing Galaxy? Because at the end of the day Galaxy is similar DRM as Uplay, Origin, Steam,...
