Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

Paul31286: What I'm wondering now is whether or not Galaxy updates itself. I've only been in the Alpha since the last patch.
When i installed Galaxy, it was 0.7.860 version. Then it updated itself and still shows 0.7.860 version.
Some games are failing to install on the Galaxy Client such as Pillars Of Eternity.
I have tried going to More > Manage > Verify/Repair which worked with Mark Of The Ninja but during installation it keeps cutting out and says Installation Failed: Disk Access Problem

Is this a common problem?
i have all my games downloaded. can i give galaxy an external path so it doesn't redownload everything?

The GOG Galaxy isn't just the client, there is more components in it like the Galaxy Updater. It is a separate process and it is updated too from time to time ;)

I just fired up Galaxy to try to install Pillars of Eternity and was unable to install it either. Mind you, I don't actually own the game so I wouldn't say it is a bug or glitch in Galaxy per se in my specific case. ;oP

On a less serious note though, check your amount of free disk space on each volume and possibly free up gobs of space.

Could you check the logs (location available in the first post)? There should be more info about this access problem. Please also create an issue on Mantis. Thanks!

vsr: Galaxy multiplayer functionality will be optional, iirc?
After Galaxy's release there will be separate downloads for AvP Classic and other Galaxy-enabled games for people who do not want to use Galaxy for multiplayer (or just want more freedom of choice)?
And if i download game from my library without using Galaxy (i.e. using browser, GOG downloader or wget, etc) will it be Galaxy-enabled in multiplayer (if this game has multiplayer and is known to have Galaxy-enabled multiplayer capability)?
Galaxy is indeed optional. Galaxy multiplayer is optional in the sense that multiplayer is optional and if all you want to play is single player then you do not need to be concerned with Galaxy multiplayer, but for games that do have Galaxy multiplayer support they would have no multiplayer option at all whatsoever if the game wasn't enhanced to support the Galaxy multiplayer service. In this case, the publisher decided to add support for Galaxy multiplayer to the game so that GOG customers have an option to play multiplayer rather than to have a single-player only game on the GOG store, or avoid selling the game here at all due to lack of multiplayer service.

In the end, the publisher decides whether or not to include multiplayer functionality in their games here on GOG and whether they will use a 3rd party service for it like Gamespy (now defunct) or some other 3rd party service that could go defunkt, make their own service (rarer and rarer these days), exclude multiplayer, or use the new GOG supplied Galaxy multiplayer service. While there are options many of us could dream up that we'd ultimately prefer to have such as the option to have direct IP to IP multiplayer, that may or may not be something a game company is willing to develop for whatever their reasons and given the choice between not having multiplayer and having it I for one would prefer to have it. Given the choice between having GOG Galaxy multiplayer or Gamespy or Steam or Rockstar Social type setup, I'll choose GOG Galaxy multiplayer 1000 times before any of the external proprietary solutions because I trust GOG to be around longer than I trust most of those game publishers/developers to be around. But having the option to use it beats not having any option whatsoever in my personal eyes. One's own opinion is free to vary mind you.

Will such games (using manual import, 2nd option) have all Galaxy features, like automatic updates, lamguage settings, repair etc?

groovebeat: i have all my games downloaded. can i give galaxy an external path so it doesn't redownload everything?
I too really want to know this. I initially though that Galaxy will auto-discover all the GOG games I already have installed but sadly that is not the case.
Hi, will I need to reinstall the beta version of Galaxy if I already have the Alpha installed?

No, self-update :)

The client has "Scan and Import" functionality for supported games and "Import Folder" for games from older, not compatible with GOG Galaxy installers.

When will the update happen, and will we have to restart the client to receive the update?

mine has not received any update

The client checks from time to time if any update is available, if you're running it 24h :)

I'm not against Galaxy's multiplayer. I need a possibility to have vanilla multiplayer, multiplayer which was developed long before Galaxy (and still working - like LAN), LAN multiplayer which doesn't force you to login to Galaxy. To have independent multiplayer via private LAN (OpenVPN, tungle, hamachi).
Take a look at Double Dragon reviews here on GOG.
