I have never been able to make GOG Connect work for me, hence me having little to zero confidence in this platform.

I also was wondering how exactly does GOG Connect work. Does it retrieve the serial keys or game licenses from the games one owns on Steam? Or does it check whether one owns the game there and that's about it?

Also, how does one uninstall or unlink GOG Connect from one's Steam library on a Mac?

Does one have the chance to download registered games on one's GOG account whenever or do they disappear and as such one has to save them elsewhere to avoid them from not being able to be downloaded later on? Or does GOG work like Steam as in that one can download one's licensed games whenever one feels like it?

GOG Connect is an agreement between GOG & games publishers to add a game into your GOG library for free if you already own it on Steam. It's only really used during major sales and only for a small subset of games. It checks using a Steam API that you own the game on Steam (your Steam account needs to be publicly visible). Once the check is done you can click on any applicable games to add them to your GOG account permanently in GOG Connect screen. They'll remain permanently in your account and can be downloaded at any time in future, even after the games disappear from the time-limited GOG Connect screen.

The current Winter sale seems like it's going to last 3 weeks and there will apparently be new games added each week, so potentially there could be two new batches of GOG Connect games.

I don't think there has been too many, if any, GOG Connect promotions since "Sep 2018" which is your registration date, so there's no way you could have either made GOG Connect work, or have it fail to work.

The rest of your questions should be answered in the GOG Connect FAQ.

Confidence on GOG is built around very different things than GOG Connect, mostly it's all about DRM-free approach.

Suffice to say, if you have confidence to spend even a single cent on Steam, there shouldn't be any reason not to have confidence on GOG.
I suggest you read the FAQ at the bottom of the Connect page.
GOG Connect looks at your public Steam profile to see you own any currently connectable games. If you don't have a public Steam profile linked to GOG, it won't work.

You can only link one Steam account, and it's linked for good. If you want to link a second Steam account, you're gonna need to create a second GOG account.

I must have not understood the mechanics initially, but I think I get it now. At first I thought it would automatically import all your Steam library. However, it just seems to be a rather random list that is only available for a short time.

My first GOG Connect obtained game. Funny, how I haven't even had time to play this particular title on Steam, so I'm not sure how good this deal really is for me, but still it's good to have a DRM free copy anyway.

Thanks GOG, sorry for being so skeptical. Usually when something sounds too good to be true, it generally isn't. I guess I have embraced that mentally, mainly, because I live in a third world country full of thieves that's basically overridden by corruption at all levels of society.

Happy feast of winter veil!
