paladin181: "Modern games don't have the detail."

Laughs in Dark Souls and the WItcher 3.

GeraltOfRivia_PL: Ah yes, i do agree. These are some of the best games in the past 15 years. However, they are a drop in an ocean. We are gamers who treat gaming as a hobby, so we know these games. The brutal reality, however, is that GTA V (just one out of many games in that series) outsold all the Witcher games combined HEAVILY (sorry for bad syntax). Dark Souls is great, but only non-casual gamers will enjoy it.

Again, i may have oversold my original claim, but the brutal truth is, games made with heart are a drop in the bucket compared to the repetitive blockbuster crap
They almost always have been.
if yeur "perspective" changes where you become a colraborator with what we face, then don't talk to anyone who knows the truth about this.

GeraltOfRivia_PL: Back when video game were starting to gain traction, they were made with heart. Of course, at the end of the day, the people making them were still paid workers trying to earn as much as possible. But they also wanted to make GOOD games.

2 decades on, Baldurs Gate 2, Fallout 2, Metal Gear Solid 2, and others still have so much detail that many modern games can't quite compare. And they were made on FAR inferior machines, with less budget.

I will take Baldur's Gate 2 any day over Battlefield or any other crap game

Nowadays, games have gone mainstream. Many casuals want to play. Games are made not as an art, but as a microtransaction hub. All of it is just an elaborate trap to convince a rich kid to spend 1200 dollars on a skin.

That's why i appreciate people like Hideo Kojima. He knows he makes weird games that won't ever go mainstream, but he doesn't care. He likes what he does.

Is gaming doomed? Have casuals destroyed any hope?
At least AAA gaming is. Like someone said, with AAA games, the emphasis is more on graphics than gameplay. With soaring visual effects budgets, developers are less willing to take risks.
I also fond of playing video games. Plus I always searching new types of video games. Now I playing
bitcoin faucet games where I can get free crypto and play this game with my friends. Very entertaining.

Mafwek: Actually, I have a feeling I might witness the end of mankind as a species sometime in the next 20-40 years I may live.
But I don't want to have kids, and thankfully possibility of that happening is highly unlikely.

My comment refers to the fact that everything is inevitably changing and coming to its end, mankind included, but being bitter and complaining about it achieves nothing. Its much wiser to actually do something with time which you have left.

Your point being? World and universe have been around much longer than humanity, that doesn't mean they couldn't go away in an instant tomorrow. Same thing with humanity.

Why not just buy/download old games?
Why are you so invested in Gaming if you haven't had any fun since the early 2000s when Baldur's Gate 2 and Metal Gear Solid 2 released?

Just play the games you like :)
cause bitching and whining is easier
and gets more reactions
Well - I beg to differ on games being doomed. Sure lots of typical AAA games are a cash-grab, and especially always on-line Games As A Service stuff is in majority absolute garbage, but there are still lots of game studio's that produce decent games, that will take you hours to complete and have a good story and game-play. Especially in the JRPG genre.

Let me give an example: The games from Nihon-Falcom. Especially the Trails of Cold Steel series are fairly recent, and have a playtime that can easily exceed 80~100 hours if you want to play the game decently (and not do a speed-run or short-cut to only action, what seems to happen with the modern impatient mindset of a lot of gamers). There are still games from that developer upcoming, and they sure will take you lot's of hours top complete. And yes, those games are no graphic monsters, because all focus is on story and game-play. Yes - All those games have lots of extra DLC's, but not a single DLC is needed to play the games, or is needed to add parts to the games. The games themselves are complete and not cut-down in any way. The DLC's are really all pure cosmetic or give stuff that is convenient, but absolutely not needed to play the game.

And that's only one developer. There are more that deserve your attention. They are only sometimes not that well known.

Forget about the huge developers or publishers like EA. They see their costumers as walking wallets, and publish only games that are a cash-grab, sometimes incomplete (but you can buy stuff that's have been cut from the complete game), and riddled with gambling stuff to shake money out of your pocket. Most times it's even all that stuff at once in one "game". Those developers/publishers don't deserve one cent of my money, and I don't care one bit if they keep existing or not.

So - Gaming in general is not "doomed" in my humble opinion. Only some big publishers deserve a hot spot somewhere in hell.

Modernity has nothing to do with the past.

Nottingham Forest won two European Cups in the 70's, look where they are now.
2020 video game releases on PC: Nioh 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, DOOM Eternal, Horizon Zero Dawn, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Hades, Desperados III, Wasteland 3, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, Persona 4 Golden, Thronebreaker, Death Stranding, Streets of Rage 4, Ghostrunner, Cold Steel III...

Not counting remakes or remasters and console exclusives, if you have one. And frankly, I don't think they've lost any quality or detail. Whatever genre you like, you have good games to choose from this year.

I've heard your complaint more than once, and I think your problem is that you're either more demanding or you don't enjoy video games as much as you used to. I love retro games too, but I can admit that they weren't perfect and that many current games will become classics.
Actually, I have changed my mind.

Gaming is doomed, just like we are.

And if I am wrong, we will be doomed to get more Gaming threads like this.

I don't suppose you would reconsider, and stop doing these thought bubble topics, by sacrificing your urges to the God of Gaming?

Not that they aren't kind of entertaining in their way, though perhaps not in the way you intended. LOL

Anyway, I diverge - WE ARE ALL DOOMED .... some sooner than others, and eventually Gaming will go the way of all things, and in some distant future our long distant cyborg relatives, will wonder what we saw in it all, as to them, Life will be just one big game, with no distinction between living and gaming.

Are you saying Gaming isn't natural or the death of gaming isn't natural?

Naturally, like all Gamers, I am concerned about this rumor you have started.
Rumors have a habit of coming true, if enough people believe in them.
