monkeydelarge: Heheh, that is a really smart way to play Civ V because simply waiting for the AI is a waste of time and boring.

In Medieval II if the other factions' turns are taking a while I'll read a book. That helped me get through Le Morte D'Arthur, Grim Company and a book on the Templar Knights.

Edit: Does anyone see my message from earlier? I can't.
All I really said was Quake II and CIA Operative: Solo Missions either because I'm inept or I'm unable to use fullscreen.

timppu: That depends on the graphics drivers, I guess? I prefer playing older 4:3 games also in 4:3 aspect ratio (with black bars on both sides), and I think they all do that just fine on all my PCs, both DOSBox and Windows games. Even when I am using my TV to play them. Occasionally I've had problems where the TV likes to stretch 4:3 games (and maybe also TV programs) to 16:9, but lately that hasn't been an issue.

Dune 2000 was tricky though as it apparently uses some odder resolution which isn't exactly 4:3 nor 16:9 I think, so normally it would be displayed in a window with black bars on both sides and up/down. I was able to make it fill the screen properly though with some tinkering, using the PowerStrip utility.

I still prefer playing some games sometimes in a windowed mode:

- If I want an easy access to some PDF manual or text file (the game manual, or FAQ/walkthrough) while I am playing it. Somehow easier to switch back and forth when the game is in windowed mode, more instantaneous.

- If I playing on a two-monitor setup and I want to see something on the other monitor too. Playing a fullscreen game on one monitor makes the other monitor go haywire, with everything being shifted to the side a bit, and sometimes colors being all wrong on that second monitor. None of those problems if I run the game in a window instead, I can then also decide more easily on which monitor the game runs, just move the window. In fullscreen mode it will always select the primary monitor, so I'd need to change graphics driver settings if I want to play it on the other monitor instead.

Other than that, only fullscreen.

monkeydelarge: Yesterday I came across a program that is sold on Steam that deals with this issue.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/388080/ You should check it out.
If he doesn't need Steam integration, the free version of the same program is https://github.com/Codeusa/Borderless-Gaming/releases/tag/8.1

Defender's Quest . In almost every level on the highest difficulties, I'm just no longer needed after a certain point, so I just do something else until it's over .

We had to read Morte for my English course. I can only imagine the time you had with Medieval II.
None.

Moreover, I do not use any application in windowed mode. My current application always fills the entire screen (to the best of its ability).

Terraria... and many other games. For some reason I like to play windowed game. Maybe just my habit -except some heavy demanding games with heavy graphics.
I also prefer to play all games in fullscreen mode, and I told them to remain aspect ratio; you can set it up like this either with the control panel of your graphic card driver or in your monitor's settings, I believe. To me, playing games in 4:3 resolutions with black borders on the sides still beats having to play them with a distracting and immersion-breaking Windows environment in the background. The only games I occasionally play in windowed mode are casual coffee-break games, but even with those I generally prefer fullscreen mode. I don't really play games on the side - either I give them the full attention or I don't bother at all.

I sometimes use borderless fullscreen which still technically is windowed mode. Eliminates screen tearing and very alt+tab friendly.
When I was playing on the PC I played any game I could in windowed mode, for multitasking. On the tablet I only play full screen, but multitasking is decent so that's not an issue.

Tristram/Tristan was a nightmare sort of, so it helped a lot to read it while playing the game to break up, "And Tristram did this and it went perfectly and he beat all the other knights at the tournament, because he was perfect." The rest of the book was really good. Then again, I read the Keith Baines version, unabridged may have killed me.
I play all emulated handheld games in windowed mode, even then the window is many times the size of the screen on the original console.
Pixel Piracy:

Because the game runs better in windowed mode (in late game it suffers in windowed mode too because of the "bad" optimization)
Only games I ever do that for are ones that force me to. I like when the game takes up the whole window to be honest. Helps me with immersion.

monkeydelarge: Are there any games you play in windowed mode and why?

I've recently realized that I will have to play Blade Of Darkness in windowed mode if I want to have the graphics in the game look the way they should. The game doesn't support wide screens so when I play the game full screen, the graphics are stretched wide and everything looks funny.
Fix your video card settings to maintain aspect ratio.
MMOs, because unlike single player games you can just chill in some town/place and chat with people. The only time I play them full screen is when running a dungeon or some instance.
