dtgreene: IIRC, only the Orc King is recruitable.

slamdunk: that would explain why I only saw an Orc King in my DS save when I checked lol

are DQ Monsters and DQM Joker any good? I know people who swear by the Game Boy Color games, but I haven't tried them myself
I enjoyed them.

I think I prefer the first DQM game the most. You have procedurally generated worlds with the occasional special floor, and you can get arbitrary combinations of abilities and high stats by breeding monsters. Also, you don't need to worry about being lucky just to get access to new worlds. There's also a nice amount of references to the first 6 Dragon Quest games (including 8-bit renditions of all the overworld themes; the DQM version of DQ1's overworld theme (also heard in GBC DQ1) is actually my favorite version of that theme, even including orchestral versions of said theme.) My one complaint is that, in tournament battles (unlike the rest of the game), you can't directly control your monsters, and you can't use items there.

Random fact: Dragon Quest Monsters (Dragon Warrior Monsters) is the first time that the overworld music and certain scenes from DQ5 and DQ6 officially appeared outside of Japan.
In King's Bounty: Dark Side yopu could choose to play an Orc Warrior as your main hero.

NuffCatnip: Orcs are my favourite race to play in RPGs. Any recommendations on games with playable Orc races?
Not a fan of MMOs at all. :)

So far I've played:
- the Elder Scrolls games
- Pathfinder: Kingmaker
- Pillars of Eternity I and II (not really orcs, but the Aumaua are orcish looking enough :P)
Most common and some uncommon games already have been named. If its about the "orc at heart" eventually Kenshi; it does have a race called "Shek"; they are a bit of a Orc meets Klingon mix. I like them (when they are not pillaging my stuff).

edit
looking over my desktop icons I got reminded that you can create your custom race (and a lot of other things; more than usual in such type of game) in "Fallen Enchantress". Bit Master of Magic like. With a bit RPGish swing towards the hero units and you personal lead character.

did anybody mention Tales of Maj'Eyal already?
Orcs are one of my favorite playable races in the Warlords Battlecry series. :)

Already have Kenshi, what a great game!
Funnily enough, the Shek are my favourite race. :P
Will have a look at Fallen Enchantress, thank you for the tip! :)

TentacleMayor: Age of Wonders 3
The original Age of Wonders also allows one to play an orc (or a dark elf, etc.).
