No email notification, I'm afraid. Not not even some kind of changelog to go with the updates. Your best bet is to follow this thread and perhaps checking the subforums of your games every once in a while.
I get the feeling GoG would be flagged for 'spamming' sending thousands of identical messages to various people... Even if it's legit...

Better to just periodically check the what updated thread

I was going to give thumbs up to the OP until I read this. :P I have a lot of games here and I can just imagine getting 50 emails one morning telling me that I can now play on a Mac.
makes sense about the spamming, but even a weekly email might do it or even a section on the homepage of GOG that says what games have been updated. just something that would require less 'clicks' to see the information would be good.

or even popup notifications built into the downloader maybe?

Now that is not a bad idea. :D
Of course I get update notifications on my account tab.

The downloader will eventually stop getting supported, so I wouldn't count on it getting updated. The most likely scenario is that GOG will instead attempt to make updates easier through their upcoming client. As to what it entails to those who won't be using it, nobody currently knows.

Wouldn't that be awesome? You couldn't play on a Mac previously, because you didn't have one. Now you can but don't really want to, so you can sell it for $3000.
