omega64: Sounds like the Wolfenstein the New Order system except it actually unlocks gamechanging stuff like secondary firing modes instead of +10hp.

Tarm: Sounds bad. The feature makes me suspicious.
avatar
Crewdroog: you can always increase difficulty and if it's in ANY way true to doom, there are always secrets to find.
avatar
Tarm: It's still mostly the same content. I'm thinking DLC/expansion danger here.
It was awful in the New Order, I really disliked it.
Seems like some people liked it though.
It forces you to play in a different way than you want to to get all the upgrades.

Crewdroog: actually, all the dlc is for the multiplayer at this point.
...
This is getting even worse. A DOOM game with focus on multiplayer.

Crosmando: Torrent when? I'm not spending 100 bucks on a steam game
You could just wait for a sale.
Might not get a torrent anytime soon considering it has Denuvo.

well, I happen to like multiplayer FPS (Destiny), so i'm willing to give it a go.

It just that it feels strange in a DOOM game.
Steam only AND Denuvo?

It seems like they really don't want my money ;P

Tarm: Only 15 hours? That sounds short.

Any feedback you can give on the "Achievements to upgrade weapons" feature would be interesting to read.

So here's how all the player progression stuff works.

There are upgrade bots in the game which will give you an attachment for one of your weapons. You get to pick the attachment, and every weapon gets two (except the pistol). When you have both attachments you can switch between them at any time.

There are weapon upgrade points which can be earned through the following:

1. Finding certain secrets
2. Doing the per-map challenges
3. Killing tons of dudes (there's a counter on the top of you screen that fills up as you kill dudes)

Those weapon upgrade points are used to enhance your attachments. For example, one attachment for the shotgun is a grenade launcher that turns a shell into a grenade. The upgrades are to decrease the cooldown, make it activate instantly (normally it takes half a second before it's ready when you pull it up), and increase the blast radius. You can pick those upgrades in any order, and they cost 1, 3, and 5 points for the first, second, and third upgrade taken. Once you unlock all three you can earn a master upgrade; this requires you to do an action a certain number of times. Sticking with the grenade launcher, if you get 20 direct hits on Imps you unlock a cluster bomb feature, where direct hits with the grenade spawn additional grenades.

There are suit upgrade points which are earned through finding specific dead soldiers (frequently in secret areas). This provide minor boosts. For example, you can get upgrades to take less damage from explosive barrels, less damage from your own weapons (i.e. reduce self splash damage), and finally no damage from explosive barrels. You have to take them in order in a particular category and there are four categories. The upgrades cost one, two, and three points respectively.

Finally, there are base stat upgrades which are found in the levels; it seems like it's going to be one per level (I only just started gaining access to them). These will increase your max health, armor, or ammo. Health starts as 100 max, armor starts at 50 max, and ammo is weapon dependent.

MrPopo: snip
This doesn't sound bad.
This game looks really hard, judging by this summary of Polygon's playthrough:

This is the new Doom game you're talking about, right? I'm hella confused already. Whatever happened to demon-shoot-kill-monster-fun-corridor-game?

And I thought we took free mouse look for granted.

Actually that sounds bad. It have made achievements way too important. Those things make me lose interest fast.

Also I agree with Emob78. The hell this doesn't sound like DOOM will get back to its roots.
The gameplay is far faster than Doom 3 and much more like the first two, but actually faster, deadlier and generally a lot better. It's not just simply a return to form, but a game that redefines Doom. Early days, but the combat is challenging. The secrets can be tricky to find. The plot's identical to 1 and 3, but actually a bit more blatantly hammy than 3 and it seems to revel in it. More brutal than Brutal and faster than Quake 3.

Oh and the engine... fucking hell. Looks amazing. No pop in. No slow-loading textures. No rips. Everything cranked up on a rig that was middle of the road four GPU generations ago and it runs unbelievably fast. Even if some people hate the game itself for whatever reason, the engine is definitely something to be exited about in terms of what it could mean for future FPS.

In name only. Much like the studio making it is only id Software in name only. This is a Bethesda game. It will be "modernized", "streamlined", "updated", "made more accessible for younger generations", analogous to the transition from Fallout to that thing bearing its name that has no relation with it. It will then become massively popular and you'll never stop hearing how much people "fucking love it". I think it's time for me to acquire a lawn.

A post I'll label as positive for me! Thank you! I was starting to get a bit worried. :P
