Just play it with keyboard, you'll immediately realize how the game was balanced for that.
You'll realize another couple of things as well...

wfdff18: Newish to this format. I was wondering if anyone knows if you can hook up a corded XBox controller to play DOOM and DOOM II or if it is exclusively keyboard controls. Thanks folks!
Unless you want to experience the game as it was made, I'd suggest that you download GZDoom sourceport that will allow you to use high resolutions and mouse look. Pair that with Brutal Doom mod and you have the best version of classic Doom that's available. :)

This. Playing Doom with a controller is valid, IMO, but people really underestimate how carefully Doom was designed for keyboard controls. The free look that some source ports add, on the other hand, just results in an experience that is not quite Doom to me anymore.
Agreed. Play it any way you want to, but the original way is to just use the keyboard and it holds up well enough.

Great joke. A real knee slapper.

firstpastthepost: Did the original doom even have mouse look? I’m pretty sure it didn’t. I played through doom and doom 2 with controller, no auto-aim and it worked fine. You PC Master race types need to learn that some people like to play games with a controller and that isn’t a bad thing.

Maighstir: My memory is as it is, but I remember it being that if you enabled mouse controls, it was set to movement (so, move forward, backwards, left, and right), while would just be keyboard.
yeah. i remember it that way too... i _think_ it was quake that started the mouse look (at least from id). i remember because i was still using just keyboard to play mp quake at the start and that was from coming from doom & doom II where there was no "up and down".

controller for doom would then be either equal to keyboard, or superior if they implemented analogue thumbsticks (which i don't think they did).

but as always, you know what the best controller for a game is? the one you love using.
