Newish to this format. I was wondering if anyone knows if you can hook up a corded XBox controller to play DOOM and DOOM II or if it is exclusively keyboard controls. Thanks folks!

The version of doom and doom 2 that are bundled in with doom 3 support controllers out of the box. For the individual games I'm pretty sure there are source ports that have controller support, can't remember which ones though.

Awesome! Thanks for the quick response.

You can use DOSbox's keymapper and many source ports now have gamepad support, like GZdoom and Doom Retro.

Just figured I'd let him know which version had out of the box controller support.

You probably could play those with controller, you could probably chop off half your fingers and then play them. However if you seriously want to play FPS without cheaty auto-aim, get a keyboard and mouse. Mouse aiming FTW. Controllers are great for certain types of games.

Oh, and there isn’t a cheaty auto-aim in doom 1 or 2, so you will likely never hit anything (at least on purpose!).

Did the original doom even have mouse look? I’m pretty sure it didn’t. I played through doom and doom 2 with controller, no auto-aim and it worked fine. You PC Master race types need to learn that some people like to play games with a controller and that isn’t a bad thing.
zDoom is love. zDoom is life.

Play with vertical mouse/analog view disabled though. That's what the game was designed for, not putting the cursor on the monster.

Can’t actually remember now, been many years. There is no pc master race at all, I am simply suggesting to use the right implement for the task. Controllers are great for platformer, fighting games, driving etc. For FPS however keyboard and mouse is best. For flight sims, a flight stick and control panel is best. Just like any other environment, do you put screws in with a hammer? The end product of the “use controllers for everything” is cheaty auto-aim and VATS and such like.

That's cool. But Doom isn't one of those games. It had a console release, more than one actually. None of them added autoaim. I'd even argue that a controller is a better tool for old FPSs that don't have mouse look than mouse.... given the whole lack of mouse look thing.

My memory is as it is, but I remember it being that if you enabled mouse controls, it was set to movement (so, move forward, backwards, left, and right), while would just be keyboard.

There's nothing in Doom that benefits from mouse aiming, thus a controller is just as equally suited to playing Doom as a keyboard is (no mouse).

The problem was crap controllers and setups, not the use of it themselves especially with proper motion tracking in them.
The xbox360 pad seriously held PC gaming back.

FPS and plenty of other games have been screwed by the lack of analogue movement thanks to the PC disaster race being stuck playing with something designed for typing.

Indeed. When it came out most people played with just the keyboard, and that's what the default controls were centered on. I play it with KBM in zDoom nowadays, but there's nothing about it that requires a mouse. You can turn around quicker with a mouse probably, but that's it.

I play pretty much everything I possibly can with keyboard and mouse, but stuff where you'd play with two hands on the keyboard? I'd rather bust out a controller.
