Roman5: http://kotaku.com/5851953/doom-4-indefinitely-postponed-following-rages-disappointing-launch

Doom 4 pretty much cancelled.

"Zenimax and Bethesda made the decision based on the "the issues and reviews" surrounding RAGE's launch, which in their eyes has demonstrated "a serious lack of confidence in the project management at id".

"company wide meeting held in Dallas, Bethesda and parent company Zenimax made the decision to "indefinitely postpone" development of Doom 4"

This is what happens when you sell your soul to the casual console market and backstab your entire fanbase.

iam16bit: And now here we are 9 years later and we have Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal (2020). Time really flies.

Glad to see Doom isn't dead, it is eternal.
There is nothing like necroing an ancient post to praise a frankly average set of games which are really not doom, more like the bastard offspring of fortnite and mario.

There is notthing about that sentence that i don't like. Those damned loot pinjatas that breaks the flow of the game.
A lot of people seem to enjoy it tho.

Doesn't change the fact that game is not perfect, and gameplay is not for everyone.
Constant breaking pacing with pinatas is not something I expected from these games.

No game is perfect, including the first 2 Dooms. For what it's worth, I'm more likely to play Doom Eternal at some point in the near future than to play one of the original Dooms.

Also, why do I get the sense that the original necroposter was spam posting?

There is no game that is for everyone. Just take the infamous Edge review of original Doom as an example ("if only you could talk to the monsters"). I didn't play Eternal and won't play it any time soon, but I think Doom 2016 was great and I started playing FPS games with Wolf3D. Was the game perfect? Of course not, but neither were earlier entries in the franchise. I honestly never understood where the pace breaking arguments come from. It's like saying that sharp turns break pace in a racing game. Glory kills are part of the flow, though I understand that not everyone likes that (I wouldn't mind if this was toned down).

Doom 2016 was better admittedly. For eternal they took all the bad parts of 2016 and emphasised them even more. Chainsaw became a necessity for ammo. Low ammo everywhere. Each level is like a bouncy castle from hell. Enemies have “weak points”, so you can right up there face with a chain gun, and still be doing next to no damage. Skills have pretty much no impact or use other than speeding up the now necessary glory kills, that get boring around 3 times after you have seen the first one and slow the whole experience right down.
Levels are pretty well designed, just too bouncy. Enemies are ok. Weapons don’t really have any impact and only seem to have been added to split up chainsawing sections.
As I said, average, completed 2016 and I got about 2/3rds of the way through eternal before I realised I had far better things to be doing.

You can go through 2016 while Glory Killing only rarely or even not at all. The ammo upgrades and ammo oriented runes can eventually facilitate that style of play so you can live just from world pickups and occasionally swapping weapons.

While in 2016, you go from 20 shells at the start to 70 with full upgrades, somebody told me that in Eternal, you go from 16 to 24 with full upgrades. Assuming the capacity upgrades are like this for other weapons, you will constantly be running out of ammo.

Yeah, not crazy abut that design choice in the new one.
Is this a modern DOOM hate thread, and if it is where do I sign up haha :D?

I can send you my Boomer certificate (with a pack of Mountain Dew) if you're unsure about me officer.
The presentation for eternal was quite nice but hey.. i'm not a shooter addict so kill me for enjoying that ;)
i have the bfg edition of 3 together with remasterd versions of 1 and 2... Its nice to go through them once in a while.. just as it is nice to play hexen once a year ;)

To be clear, are you referencing the new Unity ports that are Bethesda store exclusives or are you talking about the versions included in the BFG edition of Doom 3?

If so, neither is remastered. They are both edited though, but at least the Bethesda store ports don't have the ugly pill icons plastered everywhere because the Red Cross decided "violence hurts our brand".

Sorry for not making clear that i am talking about the versions accompanied with bfg edition and not the bethesda store exclusives ( is ID harboring under bethesda's flag? )

Bethesda's parent company, ZeniMax Media, owns id Software. Though at this point, everyone originally involved with id has left the company - Tim Willits was the last person and even he was a late addition to the "old" id roster.

Oke, thanks for the heads up. I'm not really into following those specifics.... or collecting those horrid collectibles, to each their own ofc!
